Default My Moser 9" Is Leaking...From Everywhere!

I made this thread to rant and get other peoples experiences more then anything...

I've had my Moser 9" for about 2 years, it can't have more then 5K miles and maybe 15 passes on it. Anyway; the first leak was self-inflicted. I didn't torque down the center section well enough to the housing and it had a slow leak within a couple hundred miles. No problem, my bad, took out the center section, replaced the gasket and applied some GM sealer too for good measure. That thing is as dry as a whistle. I don't know how many miles after I fixed that leak(I don't drive the car much) I noticed that the pinion seal was now leaking. Keep in mind that is pre-assembled. It's a very slow leak/drip, doesn't even really leave a spot on the garage floor but a leak nonetheless from a ridiculously expensive rear. Alright, fine. I'll deal with it, I mean it's not even leaving a spot on the floor, I shouldn't be crying over it. Then last week I had the car on the lift again, just looking it over since I drove it to work that day. Now BOTH axle seals are leaking. Excuse my langauge but; WHAT. THE. ****. Again, minor leak but now it's the principle! The axle seals were installed by me, and not saying I'm perfect, but I don't know how I could of screwed up that install. It's more annoying then anything to think I saved and waited almost 3 years to pull the trigger on this thing only to find out that it hates me and the fluid I feed it.

So what's the deal guys, do your 9" leak like a bitch?

Did you apply a slim coating of ultra grey on the axle bearings when installing them into the housing? Pinion seals leak on a majority of the 9", is your driveshaft balanced? Mine leaks slightly as well.

No I did not. I was planning on it when I install new ones though like how I did on the center section gasket. DS is balanced, it's a brand new PST.

If you painted it make sure you didn't clog the breather. I did it on my rearend but luckily I found it right after I let it roll on jackstands.

Nope, breather is clear. Made sure not to when I painted it.

As sure as you are about the breather that's the first place I'd look if you brought it to me. Common problem.....

My Moser 9" seeps from the pinion as well. It started doing it within a week of install. It annoys me.....but the thing sure is bulletproof. Mine's regularily subjected to 100+MPH driving on the German Autobahn + several laps of the Nurburgring. Never had bearing or gear issues despite the heat/speeds.

Checking the breather is easy enough. I'll check it next time I have it on the lift.

How High do you fill it? I made the mistake of filling mine up too much and all my seals leaked on a brand new moser 9. I got the fill hole put on the back of mine and that's where I would top it off at.. But the fill hole is actually way too high and would over fill it. I learned the hard way. Lol did seals twice..first time was not because of leaks tho.. It was a company fault that cost me some bucks to fix.

I filled it until it came out of the fill hole. That's how I've filled every rear...

The fill hole on the side of the case is what you want to use for knowing how full the rear is. You want the gear oil level to be to the bottom of the fill hole. Bob

I'm doing the rear brakes and found out that it leaked all over my e-brake shoes. I am so pissed. You gotta be kidding me that this rear leaks like this. I saved up for years to buy this thing and it's ******* leaks everywhere.

That is not the norm, I'd remove the breather fitting in the top of the driver side axle and make sure it is not clogged. Bob

I will do that the next time I take it in. I still need new seals, I'm assuming you sell them?

What axle bearings do you have? If you have the tapered ones the seal is very easy to damage when installing. But if it's done right they don't leak.

Anybody have the part number for the seals? I'm having trouble getting them at my local parts stores?

I thought I could just get some from a '75 Ford but it isn't going as planned...
