Default Are all stick f bodies 3.42 ratios?

I bought a oe 10 bolt differential a copule of weeks ago from a stick car that was being parted. I asked the (knoledgeable) guy how does he know it is a 3.42 as advertized? He said (all of the stick cars are 3.42s) is this true? I should have looked at the tag. I think the seller is honnest but I don't want to have it installed and it is not a 3.42. Thanks people.

Just to be clear, I am assuming this rear came from a 4th gen car right? You can verify the ratio two ways. Easy close guess is turn the axles exactly one full rotation and count the yoke rotations. It should turn 3.42 times. Just a hair under 3.5 turns obviously. The second and most accurate is to pull the cover and count the pinion and ring gear teeth and divide them by each other.

It is from a 4th gen. I will have the guy who installs it count the teeth & spin the axle. It is on the floor now & way to heavy to p/u myself lol.

All 6spd cars are 3.42's, aside from '93, they were 3.23's
Now, 5spd cars came with 3.08's I believe, but that's a total different ball game.

I will have it spun before I put it in. I think I am ok but I don't remember the year of the car.

this....i used the same method when i was searching for a used rear for my 98 SS w/6spd.......seller explained that what he had was a 2.73 from an automatic f-body.....the yoke turned just under 3.5 times to each turn of the axle hub, making it a 3.42.....i showed him that he didn't know what he had, and he immediately knocked off 150 bucks!!!

fixed my busted posi and ring gear for $100 that day, sometimes it helps to know these kinds of tricks

the '93 had a numerically lower gear because the T56 used in '93 had a 2.97 1st gear.

It is possible that the 3.42 came out of an automatic. In 2001 the 3800 Performance Package came with a Zexel Torsen II limited slip 3.42:1 axle. This was only available in the automatic.

I had one of these cars that I traded in for my WS6.

It wasn't out of a red automatic car, was it? I ask because way back in November of 2000, I swapped 3.42's into my then-new 2000 Z28 A4 car. It originally had 2.73's, and that gear change really woke it up!

Edit..Saw your post above...Couldn't have been the same car!
