Default Any 8th mile gain to be had going from 3.23s to 3.73s?

94 Formula 4L60E with 3.23's.. Stock so far but about to begin installing a bunch of bolt ons.. I found a whole complete 7.5 10 bolt F-body rearend with 3.73's ready to go for $150 bucks local. I was interested in getting some better gears but wasn't sure what ratio to get.. This is my daily driver. For the price of that whole complete 3.73 rear I couldn't get the gears alone, then the install kit, and the price of having it installed... Well heck, I don't see how I could go wrong with buying the 3.73 rear and swapping them out, unless going from a 3.23's to 3.73's won't really make enough difference to make the swap worth it.. If I could drop it a couple 10ths I would be happy.. Any info, thoughts, or suggestions? Thanks guy's..

go for it, but I'd keep your original rear end handy, just in case. Make sure the appropriate stuff matches up (ABS, etc)

going from 3.23s' to 4.56s' netted me .3 improvement in the 1/8. .5 overall improvement for the 1/4.

the kneejerk reaction would be short race need deeper gears and say yes go for it - but hold on a minute will this cause you to have to shift into 3rd just as your hitting the traps ? you may not gain if thats the case .

Assuming your crossing the traps in 2nd right now with the 323's do you know what rpm your at through the traps ? that could shed some light if theres room to still hold 2nd through the traps with 373's , if you can turn 15% higher rpm's than you are at the traps now you should be good for 373's without an extra shift/rpm drop

I dont have any track data of switching my 3.23 to 3.73. Tightened up the converter a little and feels good. I mainly did them because my car was already at slowhawk for a h c i install so I decided ehh, throw some 3.73 in there while its there lol

I say go for it! I mean its only $150. Would def make it more fun on the street if its your DD and if you dont like I cant see you having any trouple getting your money back out of it because people are alway breaking their 10 bolts and looking for used ones.

^^^ that. If nothing else, the on-street fun factor will get a big boost. I went from 3.23 to 3.73 in mine it really woke the car up. Added bonus is that leaving from a dead stop has a smaller chance of "attracting attention" on the street. I have a very grabby clutch and if I don't hit it right, it might spin the tires a little. With the 3.73s, it's easier to be civilized off the line than the 3.23s were, since I don't have to rev as high to get it rolling.

What if the car has been tuned, would it have to be retuned after the gear swap?

yes , need to enter the correct ratio in the gear/tire calculator area so the speedo will be accurate and the shift tables need to be adjusted as they require a mph as well as rpm for a shift to happen at WOT , the speed portion will be different with different gears
