It really depends on what you will be doing with the car. I have a simple street machine with some respectable RWHP numbers, built T56 with a McLeod clutch and the rear has lasted me 11 years in stock form and I'm rebuilding it here soon (bent axle.) I'm not abusive to the car, but if I were to get into heavy track use or if I was more abusive, I would get a S60 as they don't rob as much power as a 9". Even tho the 9" is pretty bullet proof depending on the brand. If you plan on leaving on the converter at 5000rpm with real wrinkle wall slicks, then you'll need a 9".

Standard trans and plan on yanking wheels? 9"...

Depends on what you plan on doing with the car. If you plan to track it regularly after you install the 408, then it's well worth going with a 9" or S60.

Remove LS1, install 408, sell LS1, buy rear end.

I dont think you will have problems, there are a few guys around here still running 10 bolt's with good differentials and gears in them with 400+ci motors holding up fine. A buddy of mine has been running mid 10s for years on his. If you are at the track every weekend pulling 1.4 60fts then i would say upgrade, for a street car with occasional track time i wouldnt worry about it.

You'd better have AAA or use of a car trailer!! I broke my 10 bolt with my current setup. The cost of your parts won't be far from a used aftermarket rear!! Or like Guitar said sell the LS1 and a new rear!!

i was thinking of a 12 bolt just to stay with a gm rear. and get the bolt in stiyle axles. the 12 bolt should be able to handle the 500rwhp from a auto

It may last you a good while being an A4, but it's a ticking time bomb with a 408. I would give it a 60/40 chance of hanging on with just a few trips a year to the track.

Put a solid pinion spacer and a girdle on it and let it eat, on the off chance that you break an axle just upgrade them.
