Default Gear whine after 800ish miles.

A friend and I put a 4.10 in his Camaro. We did it the shadetree way of just doing it by feel ( I know) but anyway it was basically dead quiet (Richmonds to) for the first 800 miles. Well he went and raced a Mustang, done fine, drove it a few miles to the store, parked it for 15 or so minutes, got a mile away from the store and bam like you flipped a switch it started making noise, this was during normal driving? What could have caused this? He had beat on the car before the mustang race. We only tightened the pinion nut with a cheap 1/2 electric impact. Maybe the pinion nut backed off?

Your pinion bearings have to be set to the proper preload using a dial type torque wrench. You probably either over torqued or under torqued the pinion bearings and now they are whining on you. Good luck
