How durable can a 10 bolt be.. Assuming you never launch
So this has probably been gone over a million times by now.. But I'm interested in putting 4.10s in my stock 10 bolt. Now here's the catch.
This car will see no track time. No sticky tires. Pretty much it's a street warrior. It'll see pulls from a roll, always on street tires. No launches at all.
So am I kissing my rear end goodbye.. Or could it hold up?

eventually, yes. But the big issue with the 10 bolt is from a dig on sticky's. Once you do that, its pretty much a grenade waiting to go boom. Mine happened to go at the track, but before I ran sticky's at the track it lasted forever(110,000mi) with some serious street time, and the majority of those miles/street time was already a built LS1. you should be fine for a long time, but eventually I personally would replace it.

It'll should be fine. I ran 460 rwhp on the 10 bolt for 2 years running 315 Dr's. I also did plenty of roll racing. The only issue I had was the pinion seal kept leaking.
I did just get a 9" because I'm going to spray it eventually and didn't want to put money in the 10 bolt for gears, TA etc.

Granted I'm an a4, I'm running about 420rwhp through a 10 bolt. Honestly, street tires and rolls will be fine for the stock rear end. While I would definitely consider it the weakest link in the car, proper maintenance and non-abusive driving will help make the 10 bolt last. May want to consider throwing a T/A cover on there for a little additional support.

By "driving it hard" do you mean launches? I have no intention of launching this car regardless of what rear end I have. I just drive around town, and do occasional 1st and 2nd gear pulls from a roll.

I have a spirited driving style, I just choose not to launch from a dead stop all the time and keep street tires on the back for now. I may have "borrowed" time but you can have a little control of how much time that is. I'm fully expecting a lvl 2 4L60 and s60 to be my next purchase(s)..there goes $5k

I blew my bearings in my 98Z A4 with stock power at 132k miles. I had 6 passes on the strip not launching and after that it was gone. I replaced it with a stock replacement 10 bolt with 28k miles from a 99 T/A. I hope I can get another 110k miles out of her or have the funds available for a Moser 9 with wavetrac. 10 bolt is always and will remain the weakest link of the 4th gens.
Also I don't drive as hard on her anymore.

175k on mine... It has several hundred passes at the strip and some playing around. Never been on a sticky tire and I'm known to bog instead of spin while launching. Not sure how much longer it will live but so far it's been fine.
I believe I'm around 370-380rwhp (until a Dyno breaks my heart that's my guess).

To answer this. My 3.73 have been in the car for nearly 8 years or so. T56 car. Always on a normal tire. It was fine as long as it was spinning. I put the tires on it and 3 passes and the ring gear was a gone LOL.. If your not on any kind of drag radial itll be fine. If you are all bets are off.

stock diff dead around 140k miles, chewed up spider gears. at 180k miles lost 2 pinion teeth. Wheel bearings showing signs of chewing into axles.
Ran drag radials and street tires, 200+ launches on track. Lots of roll racing.
Gears swapped out around 40k miles to 3.90 gears.
Will your 10 bolt last? Everyone is different with how they drive. On a camaro with less than half the power I was breaking 10 bolts every 60k miles. Auto. Street tires. Go figure.
