Default Rearend went out Dealer says $2200 to fix !! Please help Please

Yesterday I posted in this forum asking for help to figure out the rearend noise I was hearing (thanks for all the replys) well....... I found out the hard way !! It was the pinion gear and it broke while driving down the road and took everything with it !! I had to have it towed to the dealer and they are saying that I need to replace all the gears and stuff in there due to the fact that the pinion gear took out everything in there and they are saying it will cost me $2,200 !!! Can this be true ?? I can not imagine that it should cost this much. I am thinking maybe I should have it towed to some performance shop and for that price I may be able to get a whole new performance rearend. Oh ya one other thing I asked if I was to have it done could they put in 3.73's instead of the 3.42's that are in there now but they say I would have to replace the housing as 3.73's will not fit ?? Is this true ?? I have never heard of this before ? Please Please any ideas on what I should do here ?? I can pay the $2,200 but I do not want to get ripped off.

Thank you

Jeff B.

Dude... do not pay $2200 to have them fix that. That is definitely a rip off... you can buy a brand new Moser or Strange 12 bolt, or a 9" for that price. Take it to a dedicated differential shop and see what they would charge to fix it for you...

IMO, I wouldn't put any more money into the 10 bolt... get a 12 bolt or 9" now that you need one.

LOL, I don't think the entire rear is $2200 from GM. You're getting hosed.

Get a Moser 9" or 12 bolt and solve all your rearend problems!!!! I've broken 5 10 bolt rearends now I'm putting in a Moser 9" w/ 4:56 gears.....

Ya I thought that they were trying to rip me off. I guess I will need to get it towed from there on Monday I just have to figure out which way to go. Where would I take it to have a performance rear end put in ?

You could always purchase a 12 bolt from one of our sponsors and put it in yourself with a couple of friends... I know with mine all it took was some hand tools.

If you want to have a shop do the install for you, I suggest looking around in your local area for a transmission/differential shop that specializes in rear ends like those found in our cars.

If you have the money, go for the 9" or the 12 bolt. I know I would

Any shop that says 373s need a different housing should not be working on your car!

Can you please recommend a sponser where I can get the complete rearend as I think I will just buy a complete rearend and put it in myself. I installed a blower in my 02 GT Mustang so I am sure that I can put a rearend in. Also how much do you think a complete 12 bolt would cost ??

Your in luck........ Im bored......... I take its for your wifes 00 WS6 M6.
I take you want to keep ABS and ill say that you have TCS if not just subtract it from the total. Spped Inc is the cheapest i have found from one of the sponsors unless some one is doing a GP. Shipping should be between $150 and $200 or maybe cheaper depends on the Carrier. My Buddys to TX was $135 from Moser.
Heres a run down and just choose your own rear gear if you want different.

INCLUDES: HOUSING, M/E CUSTOM ALLOY AXLES, WHEEL STUDS, RETAINER PLATES, EATON POSI, PRO STREET GEARS, PINION YOLK, SET UP KIT, CHROME COVER, AND ASSEMBLY
X MOS198 DIRECT BOLT-IN12 BOLT W/EATON POSI-choice of gear
$1,899.99 Update $1,899.99
X MOS133 33 SPLINE OPTION
$100.00 Update $100.00
X MOS102 FOR 1350 YOLK UPGRADE
$35.00 Update $35.00
X MOS101 FOR FUNCTIONAL ABS AND/OR TCS
$100.00 Update $100.00
X CAB001 WELD-IN CONTROL ARM RE-LOCATION BRACKETS
(Select Option) Black Red Yellow ($5) Navy Blue ($5) Hugger Orange ($5) White ($5) Silver ($10) $69.99 Update $69.99
Sub-Total does not include shipping charges or taxes
Sub Total $2,204.98

There is also another kit for $69.99 for the swaybar mount to the rearend and BMR sells that also.
That is exactly what i am going to order here in a couple months.
Hope that helps.......
Kyle

Thanks for the info I think I will go with something like the moser as I plan to put a blower in her car at a later date also.

No way I would throw out $2200 for a 10 bolt. Have it towed to a performance shop you can trust and get a 12 bolt. or get a used 10 bolt and have that installed. check in your local forum.
