Dead quiet 12 bolt: Is there such a thing???
Dead quiet 12 bolt: Is there such a thing??? I have a Moser 12 bolt with 4.30s, and it whines noticeably on deceleration, and some on acceleration. It is my understanding that ~3.90 and higher (numerically) gears are often louder because of the pitch of the teeth. I am now wanting to go with a lower (numerically) gear such as a 3.73 or 4.10, can I ever expect a dead quiet 12 bolt rearend? Are certain gears quiter than others? Is there something that can be done when the gear is setup to assure it is quiet?
Thanks, Shawn

My old 12 bolt in my LT1 was dead silent. Why? Because I ordered the housing and the guts, and had a reputable local rear end shop set it up for me. Was almost dead silent until the day I sold it, about 10k HARD miles later....
If you order a 12 bolt straight off the shelf and ready to bolt in, chances are it's not going to be quiet and will get a lot louder with abuse. Most companies don't put much effort into setting them up since assembly is free. Moser comes to mind on that one
Get an 8.8. Cheaper, lighter, plenty strong and dead quiet

My moser 12-bolt with 4.10s in it was dead silent when it was originally done (gears installed by MTI). With each visit to the track (cutting 1.4s to 1.6s) it got louder and louder.
They make "street" gears and "race" gears. The race gears are softer to absorb impact loads without breaking, but they deform with time and use and will cause more and more noise. If you get some street gears, and get them set properly by a reputable shop, they should be quiet.

Mine is pretty audible when in 6th gear around 55-65mph... that's the range the pitch is the most annoying. The gears were set up by someone very experienced with it, but he warned me the more I launch hard on them, the more they'll make noise. Just the nature of the beast I think once you go up over a 3.73 ratio.
I had the option to have a 3.73 in mine, but after driving around with 4.10s in my 10 bolt for so long, I felt that 3.73s would make my car feel sluggish off the line.

Shawn, I've had 3 sets of US Gear 4.11's in mine and all were noisy. Recently had a set of Motive 4.11's installed by a local guy that knows what he's doing. It was dead silent. Of course, just like NineBall said, after cutting a few 1.6x 60's, it has picked up some whine on decel. Still quiet on accel though.
Try the Motives and a good installer.

I think the key to the Mosers is having someone that knows what they are doing set up the gears. I am having someone do this with my moser 12 (4.11s) this week. I'll post how it turns out when I get the car back.

I had Jay Billingsly set up my Moser. With the original gears it was Very Loud. After Jay set it up with new Motive gears it is as quiet as the stock 10 bolt was the day I bought it. I have launced at 6000+ many times and not had additional noise on the new setup. It is all in the setup. The way Moser had it set up from the factory it was a wonder it did not grenade.
