Default Rear end leaking

Should I change the fluid or would I need a new rear end?

Check your fluid level, I would just top it off. Bob

You need to pull the cover off and reseal it to start after cleaning all the old debris off the rear end and see if it is leaking through the axle tube. If it is then you need to go further with repair or replace.

Pretty much normal for these rears, change the fluid for sure and don't worry about it.

^^^ agree. Most of these rear have seepage at pinion seal(if seepage/leakage isn't enough to cause a drip,it's normal) and at the center section where the axle tubes are pressed in. Pop the cover to drain the fluid and do a fresh fluid refill, don't forget to add the 'posi additive'. 98s' and earlier had Auburn posi which have cone clutches and as they wear, the fluid becomes a slurry of fine casting material. That slurry can cause premature bearing wear.

Sorry for jumping in on your thread but didn't want to start a new one just to ask a question. Just picked up a 2000 SS 6MT. Pretty decent car but does have a few goofy issues...one of which is a crappy chrome pumpkin cover which is leaking. Not badly, but leaking non the less. Should I just replace with OEM cover or go with a quality aftermarket. And what ratio am I likely running?

You should have 3.42 gears if it's the original rear end.

Whoever put the chrome cover on probably didn't install it properly, either over or under torquing it.. Or a gasket issue

Thx guys. It looks like a cheap AF cover. Trying to slowly get this car to legit. If it's quality aftermarket and adds real performance increased function or visual impact , that's one thing. If not, I'd rather it be OEM.

BTW, the standard diff cover that comes on a Moser is a chrome one. I was a little surprised by that when my 12-bolt showed up.

Twenty years ago, chrome was as popular as black is today. Bob

The chrome cover on the 8.5" in my '71 is older than most of the cars on this site.
