Default Question about nicks and scratches on 9" housing

So long story short my rear end was taken apart for a rebuild and in the process the person (it looks to me anyway) went a little to far cutting the races out of either end of the housing. Now each end has three of four pretty deep gouges and scratches in them. Im trying to load pics but i can't get into my photo bucket account. My question is has anyone else ran into this? What did you do to fix the situation?

I've seen worse. clean up the nicks and scratches by hand with emery cloth. put a thin layer of RTV in the scratch/nick areas during assembly to prevent any rear end gear oil seepage. then you should be 'good to go'.

Like mentioned clean the areas up the best you can and make sure there is no sharp edges. When you install your new bearing make sure you use a little RTV on the seal itself. This will help it seal.

I don't ever recall having to cut one out. Make sure to clean your entire housing out.

I don't want to share to much because its still kind of a fresh situation and i don't feel its right to bash on someone before they have the opportunity to make it right. I just wanted to get some opinions from guys who have been around and worked on these rear ends a time or two so i could possibly determine what a good fair fix to the situation is.

When I took my 12-bolt apart to swap the gears, axles, and bearings I couldn't get one of the races out. I found the spacers between the backing plate and flange were left out, so when the four bolts were tightened it bent the flange outward at those four points. I used a hammer and piece of steel to straighten the housing end and the race slid right out. Not a big deal, it just took a few extra minutes to figure out the problem and solve it correctly.

I think you'll be alright anyway. Just use some silicone/RTV on both seals and you'll be good to go. Nobody will ever see it once the axles are installed.
