Default advantages of changing gears after putting in a trex cam?

Not sure if this is the right board to post this but oh well. I am putting in a t-rex cam soon and everyone is telling me i should "change my gears". What do they mean exactly? What are the advantages from changing them to 4.10? Sorry for just a newbie question.

you want gears so you can stay in the "narrow" powerband.

But changing my gears will affect my car how exactly? does this apply to A4's only or also to M6's?

gears will allow you to get into your powerband faster. it applies to any transmission. with the stock 3.42's and big cams you'll feel the car is a bit sluggish until you get into the cars powerband.

well gears go for $200ish new sometimes you can find a gp for like 160, but heres the delema...the 4.10's and higher gears even 3.73's are considerably weaker then stock people have sheered off teeth from both the ring & pinion...thats why alot of people go with a 12 bolt or 9in...gear install usually will run you around $300 for a professional job.

Here is a good link describing the effects of gears and tire ratios.

This link is a How-To if you are wondering what all it involves.

Too answer your question....the car will simply fall on its face when you let the clutch out under normal driving manners. It feels like it is bogging all the time until you get under way. I have h/c and have the same problem. With 410 gears it will quickly get the revs going and avoid that problem. Second problem is addressed above. You will have a lot of hp and because the 410 gears are thinner you may have problems. You now are in the same boat as me.....need 12bolt and gears to complete the job and it will drive a ton better.

a rear end...replaces your 10 bolt rear which is prone to have issues under load with alot of hp...especially in manual cars, they usually run 2300ish for a fully assembled 12 bolt ready to bolt in and can be had from most of the sponsors on this board.

well i'll leave my cars gears and rearend as it is and get a really good tune from east side for now. From what i have read on this board, people seem to be doing fine like this. Tell me if i am wrong?

With that cam you'll want some taller gears like the 4.10's. The Trex makes it best power high in the power band and the gears will insure that you stay up there.

You need a plan for moding your car. A cam is a big choice and a big cam is a bad choice without a plan. I'd say sell the Trex and get a 224 or a 230 max with stock heads and stock gears.

Maybe you are right. I'll do a little more research and see. Thanks again guys as always.
