Default what diff is this? seller said "detroit locker"

Bought this nearly original 00 SS earlier this year and the seller specified that it had a "Detroit Locker Positive Traction". Car has always spun both wheels but it doesn't have any of the noises I've read about concerning a Detroit locker. Car has 192k on it and the diff fluid looks great so it has defiantly been serviced.

What rear is this? Thanks for any help.

3:23 gears. Mine is defiantly different than yours. Hmm, I've put a quart of Valvoline 80w90 which says "limited slip". Not sure if I need to add the additive before topping it off or not. ???

With over 200 views, I'm surprised this hasn't been answered. How many different types of diff came in these cars?

Agreed. It doesn't look like photos of Detroit lockers or even TrueTracs I've seen.

A 2000 SS came with a Torsen 'posi' off the GM assembly line. Since it went to SLP to become an SS,it could have received an Auburn or an Eaton.

I didn't know that SS Camaro went to SLP.

I've looked at photos of Eaton and Auburn and still don't have my answer. I've come to the conclusion that it's a unicorn and just poured Valvoline 80w90 in.

Others WILL post up that it is a Torsen.

The SLP build facility was located at the GM St.Catherines' Camaro/Firebird production plant. All f-bodies were built completely at the GM lines. A vehicle with SLP options went directly to the SLP facility. There the conversion would be done.
Let's take the Camaro SS for example. SLP would receive a complete Z28 and transform it to a SS. Some items would be the hood, spoiler, rims, exhaust, intake to name a few of the things. Hood and spoiler that were replaced would be sold as 'take-offs',rims if someone ordered the 17" 10 spoke chromed would replace the 17" 10 spoke painted(the painted ones would be sold as 'take-offs',I bought quite a few of them),SLP CAI(cold air intake) would replace the OEM intake filtration system. Rearends were available with Auburn and Eaton carriers and rear gears were changed if so ordered. Autos could get optional torque convertors. Suspensions were changed. There's a lot more to the list.

Cool. I didn't know any of that about the SS.

Thanks for the clarification guys. I was hoping it wasn't a unicorn. Does this mean I should have put the additive in? I just filled it with Valvoline 80w90 which specified "Limited Slip".

You are good to go. The Auburn units use a 4oz. bottle or two of limited slip additive.

Thanks for the quick response. I was surprised at how great the lube that I drained looked.

That's a factory 10 bolt 7.5" Torsen unit. It can become a locker or a open real quick with a small amount of abuse!

All 6 of my Torsen equipped fbodies, all autos, all stock, broke the torsen in normal driving conditions. Usually on a hard green light leave or a WOT 1-2 shift. UCKIN JUNK!

The last 2 broke locked up permanently

Wow, that's not very encouraging considering I'm about to put in a SS3600. :O

I ran a Eaton clutch posi, LPW cover, solid pinion bearing spacer, and Motive Performance gear for quite some time with no issues, but you can easily spend a lot of cash on a 10 bolt. The A4 trans will help it live but the Torsen is a time bomb.

If you have to keep the 10 bolt for a while get with us, we'd be happy to help with the upgrades at great prices!

Thanks. I'll spend some time on your sight and see what you offer. Sounds like your suggesting swapping out the Torsen with an Eaton and them maybe doing a girdle? Feel free to PM me with prices and or links. I have the ability to weld the tubes if needed.

I have a Torsen t2r in my 10 bolt with a T/A cover...been holding up fine. it's held up to many bottom 12 second passes and a few mid 11 passes on the street.
