Default gear options for torque converter upgrade.

Gentlemen, can you please advise on my present project. I recently acquired a 2000 LS1 A4 TA. I plan on upgrading to the Circle D 278 mm 3200 T/C, per a conversation with Chris. Is it worthwhile to change gears from oem 323's to 373's, or higher and still maintain traction ?

This car will be a 100% daily driver. Also, if the gears are changed, do I need a HPP to input the data in the car's pcm ?, or is there something better ?

I had an LT1 with a 2800 stall & 373's. I used a HPP for the gear change, which was from 273 to 373. I sold it due to opti headaches. The LS1 car is the replacement.

Most of the handheld tuners will accommodate a gear change.
The most popular combo is 3600-4000 stall with 3.73s'.
First,don't do a 3200 stall,do 3600 minimum !
The 3.23s' will be fine, just add an aftermarket tranny fluid cooler.
There are many threads in this gears and axles forum AND IN THE AUTO TRANSMISSION FORUM discussing don't go less than 3600.

here's one for reference, there are many

you already had a thread like this in the trans forum this month.

I would hold off on the gear swap, and I also recommend ATLEAST a 3600.
90% of the guys wish they had more once they get a converter.

Evidently the OP didn't like the responses he got in the auto tranny forum so he started a thread in this gears and axles forum hoping to get responses more to his liking. The same members frequent both forums so responses should be no different.

I would absolutley pass on that gear swap. Cost vs. benefit just isn't there for a 3.23 to 3.73 swap once you have an optimized stall speed - unless of course you're one of the very few who is excessively bothered by "looseness" of the higher stall, but I wouldn't even think about that gear swap until after driving it for a while with the stock gears to see how you like it. Keep in mind that you won't drop more than about 0.10 second of ET (and likely less) with a 3.23 to 3.73 swap once you have a 3500+ stall speed in place with an LS1/4L60E combo.

And I completely agree with the guys above. 3500 stall speed minimum.

Well, there are certainly many opinions here. Although I did post in the automatic forum regarding the converter topic, I assumed it might be more appropriate in the gear forum for a gear question. Not that I didn't find the answer to my liking. I have had conversations with Chris from Circle D, and I am still having a conversation regarding the 3600 or possibly 3800 torque converters, with Chris.

There are many convertor/gears crossover threads, not unusual. As in post #5,do a GOOD convertor, then consider gears AFTER much driving with the convertor. I think you won't be doing gears. Even the A4s with the 2.73s leave the gears alone after a convertor. I've been in the 'extreme' gear range, ran 4.56s' for 4 years, back to 3.23s' for now, building a 4.10 rearend.

Tell chris to make you a hard hit 3600 and never look back.
