3.73's on a M6....

After cam and headers and the rest of the bolt ons, I should be in the 400 hp/tq zone... So why not finish the car up with a set of gears...

The 4.10s have me a little worried for being just a tad too radical maybe, but I'm no expert.

anyone against the 3.73's? pretty much all street driven...

How many people have tore into their 10 bolt with new gears and gotten away without new sounds and what not? I'm only guessing the new sounds are bad....

Jalbert Jun 21, 2004 08:57 PM

Put in the 4;10's, I just went from 3.23 to 3.73 in my ss auto and my rpm only went up to 1800 at 60 mph from 1500 rpm and your m-6 has a taller 6th gear if you want that lower end grunt go for it.if you have 3.41 now it's not worth the effort for 3.73 my opinion.

NastySSoo Jun 22, 2004 04:29 PM

3.73= good 4.10= Better. I think youll love 4.10s on street and track. Ive had both! :drive:

2001CamaroGuy Jun 22, 2004 05:00 PM

I have 3.73s and PERSONALLY would never go higher in my car. I found that with 400rwhp the car was really easy to brake loose in 1st and 2nd on street tires (295/35/18s) and really wished that it was possible to drop down to a 3.55 (between the 3.42 and 3.73). My car is a daily driver (NO drag racing ever) that would second as a road race car.

With that said, everyone who I know that has 4.10s loves them but then again they are either on slicks, don't have lots of hp, and/or are big drag race guys (hit the strip every weekend).

As far as fuel economy and drivability they will be the same (for simplicity) so just go by what you want. :)

taqwache Jun 22, 2004 05:22 PM

i have had both with the M6. the 4.10s were defenetly the better ones to have but after breaking 2 sets i installed a set of 3.73s. the car slowed down .2 seconds but i have not broken them since. even after hard launches on slicks and many street races later the 3.73s have held up. eventually they will break but they last a whole lot longer then the 4.10s. i only got like 10 runs on both set of 4.10s before they let go. it is up to you. if you had a 12 bolt on the other hand, i would only run a 4.11 behind it.

z28dan Jun 24, 2004 05:04 PM

I've got 3.73s on mine. I can say the difference between them and a 3.42 gear is really noticeable. I have no problems spinning my tires with the 3.73s, so I don't know how much I would like a 4.10. But If I had to order a rear end again, I'd go with the 4.10s.

exodus Jun 24, 2004 10:38 PM

I have had both, and liked my 4.10 better with my m6. Don't get me wrong, the 3.73 is still better than the stock gear, but the 4.10 performed better all around for me. As far as drivability on the street everyday, it is awsome because of that 6th gear. IMO, go with the 4.10, even if you don't frequent the track, you will be pleased.

another vote for the 4.10 on M6...

Black02SS Jun 28, 2004 05:41 PM

I am running the 4.10's in my 12 bolt and love them except for one thing. For a N/A car, they are great. But if you run any kind of FI, IMO they are too much. I have to go down to a 3.73's in the 1/4 when on a 100 shot becuase of my mph. As far as gas millage on the 4.10's. I averaged 28 mpg on the highway.

JL ws-6 Jun 28, 2004 10:31 PM

I'll be going ot 4.3's over the winter. Not concerned about loss of mileage at all. at 2000 rpm now with the 3.42's, I'm going about 90. At 70 w/ 4.10's, you will be turning about 1850rpm. With 4.30's at 70, you will be turning around 2100. Still in 25 mpg territory. I want my car to run at the strip, one reason I will go to this gear. I am also going to a 26 in tire, which is slightly taler than stock. As for putting gears in a stock10 bot, don't waste your money. You can, but I 'll bet that 6 months to a year down the road, you will wish you just wen to a 12 bolt/9 inch. Save 300 bucks and put it towards the rear that won't need a rebuildafter a few good beating sessions. My .02

I've got 3.73's in a stock rear and I like them alot better than the 3.42's although they didn't really help much at the track other than making the car more consistant coming out of the hole. In a couple of months i'm going to try a set of 4.10's in the stock rear (on drag radials) until next spring when I buy a real rearend.

JBsC5 Jul 3, 2004 07:32 AM

PUt the 4.10's in the M6 not the 3.73's.

With my M12 tranny I put a set of 3.73's that a buddy had taken out of his M6 show car..

With the M12 tranny in the Z ..and the 3.73 gears..its identical to the 4.10s and the m6...

Without a doubt go for the 4.10s'..

I drove my buds.. M6 C5 with 4.10s and its identical in the first three gears to my car..

Definitely a daily driver and a totally sleeper package..

Not radical and a great mod..

Go 4.10's with M6 without a doubt or concern.

Good luck

chpmnsws6 Jul 3, 2004 08:27 AM

i have 3.70 gears and hate em! going up to 4.30's for now and 4.56's when i get a 28 inch tall tire.

BTW- this is on a 9 inch

if it were me, i'd hold off on gears with the 10 bolt as ur gonna snap it anyway if you get on some sticky tires

v8juice Jul 6, 2004 08:17 PM

Get the 4.10's with the m6.I had the stock 3.42 ratio but I can tell the difference in the way the car pulls from low speed with my new gears.

Ravenous T\A Jul 7, 2004 01:37 PM

But arent the 3.73 stronger than 4.10's?? I have read alot of post with guys with 10bolts tearing up the gears cause they are weaker.

JL ws-6 Jul 7, 2004 02:01 PM

alot of guys tear up 10 bolts, regardless what gear is in it. My advise, just swap in a 12 bolt, and do your gears then, don't waste .02 on putting gears in a 10 bolt, that's what I am doing.

Dragula Jul 7, 2004 06:27 PM

I just finished what your contemplating. see sig. I haven't broke the gears in yet so I can't speak from experince on the high rpm's but at low RPM's you can tell it wants to go in 1st through 4th and it still lugs around in 6th.

There are to many posts of people snapping the 10 bolt. I made an appointment to just do 4.10's in the 10 bolt, but I couldn't imagine the $300 to get new ones, let alone the tow truck bill.

I am inclined to agree with you from experience, with my current setup(in sig) I set off the shift light(set at 6400) right at the traps, consistant 117 mph) I am going to add spray soon and I think with 3.73 I will not only have a slighty stronger gear set than with the 4.10's, rpm thru the traps will not be an issue. NA I love the 4.10's. :)

which gear did the shift light come one in? 4th gear? just wondering...

edit: BTW how much are you guys paying for gear installs (with parts)?

Powered By V8 Jul 14, 2004 06:35 PM

so how much money do you guys shell out for a gear install?
