Please listen to my rear-end noise. It's only present when on the gas; back off and it goes away. I inspected the driveshaft and u-joints and they looked fine. Thoughts?

Could be a wheel bearing, I would jack the rear up and inspect or run it in the air and see if anything changes.

Maybe just different terminology, but the rear axle doesn't have wheel bearings; there are axle bearings, carrier bearings and pinion bearings. I assuming you're referring to the axle bearings?

If so, is there a different sound/symptom to differentiate between an axle bearing issue and a carrier bearing issue?

WOW don't drive it any more until someone looks at it, that could be a bunch of different problems but I'm going to guess a very loose pinion nut or worn pinion bearings.

I've replaced my rear wheel bearings and axles since they got so bad that they ate into the axle shafts. It basically sounds like metal grinding, but it is fairly consistent, as there is a lot of weight always pressing on it.

Yours sounds like a major driveline imbalance, or almost like buffeting in the exhaust (except for the shifter-shake). I say jack up the rear and let it run in gear, see what's shakin'. Make sure to support it well and use jack stands. Be careful.

Yes, wheel bearing/axle bearing is the same thing. Seems I remember reading about a similar situation and the guy took it to the mechanic and he took it apart and found missing teeth on the factory posi unit. Obviously something like that is gonna be difficult to diagnose without opening the unit up.....

Yeah, planning on pulling the cover off this weekend and seeing what's going on in there. The noise got worse, so the car is now parked until it's resolved. From all my research, sounds like axle bearings and perhaps carrier bearings. Either way, time to rebuild or replace. Thanks for everyone's input.

I had grinding noises on mine. I took it apart this week and my carrier bearing are shot.

Does not sound like mine when I had carrier bearings go bad. This almost sounds more mechanical than bearing noise.

So, I took the rear-end out. Two teeth sheared off the ring gear. I suspect that I'll also find worn bearings, but I ordered an S60 to replace the rear.
