Default 10 Bolt on it's way out....MWC Fab 9" Install

Well the stock rear has been making some noises and getting progressively louder for a while now in my 02' Z28.
Just got back from LSfest West a few weeks back and the noise has gotten even worse since then. I have been having some rubbing issues with the offset of my wheels and with the wide 315/30/r18 Rival-s on all 4 and I needed to add a spacer. I didn't want to add a spacer without getting some longer ARP wheel studs, so I took the rear cover off in an attempt to get the c-clips out and pull the axles.

The little locking bolt that holds the c-clip paddle (8mm) in the torsen style diff of course stripped. I really didn't feel like fighting with it laying on my back on the floor so I just decided to pull the whole axle out. Only took a few hours to pull it so not a big deal, until I did a once over and noticed the carrier bearings are done.

I told myself I would never spend a dime on beefing up the 10-bolt, but even if I ordered a rear today, it would be a few months time until I receive the setup I want.

In the mean time I am just going to get a new bearing kit, and while I'm at it throw some 3.90s in at the same time. I hate even spending a dime on this rear but I don't want to be down all summer waiting on a rear either.

The whole setup with gear, install kit, and new axle bearings/seals ran about $370. I can live with that small investment, but this is just the beginning, and I suspect it wont last long before I need a whole new setup.

I can understand and respect what you're doing here. At $370 I think it's worth it especially if it means you get to enjoy the car for the season. I'm contiplating on buying a 12 bolt, 9 inch, or S60 right now, before my 10 bolt breaks, so I can recoup some money from it while it's in decent shape. On the other hand spending 3k on something that isn't broke yet doesn't set well with me lol

Well to finish this thread out, the gear install went good for my first time. Ended up with .008 backlash and a 25 in/lb preload. I went to 3.90s and have been taking it easy and getting the required heat cycles. So far I am happy with this new setup. There is 0 wine from the rear now which is good, but also makes me realize just how loud the worn out bearings were.

With the drivers side axle being so chewed up I really didn't want to reuse it. I also didn't want to spend any more money on the 10-bolt so regrettably I went with a repair bearing/bearing saver on that side. Made getting the C-clip in impossible without grinding it down some. I also had to hammer that sucker in knowing that I will have to cut it if I ever want to get it out.

Well, this didn’t last very long. Went to throw some new brake pads on last week as the first auto-x event was this last weekend. Pulled the wheels off and everything was covered in gear oil. Both sides. I wanted to get some practice in as there is only a few local events here before LSfest in May so I took the brakes all apart and washed everything down. I also suspected a clogged breather as both axle seals and the diff cover were leaking so pressure build up possibly?!?! So I enlarged the breather orifice to hopefully eliminate that potential. But I’m done putting any more money into this sucker. So an order with MWC has been placed. Fab 9”/35 Spline/S-trac/HD alum thru bolt/transverse shock mount/back braced/watts link stands/tow loops/long torque arm. So now the pressure is on to get this thing and have it installed before LSfest the first weekend in May.

I ordered one with a very similar spec on 2/23. I didn't ask how long it was going to take, but folks are saying 4-6 months is realistic right now. I'd LOVE to have it by the end of May, but I'm not holding my breath.

Either way, we've got some awesome rears coming our way!

I'd be happy with three months. We ordered at tax/race season though... could be longer.

So the average wait time for one of these MWC rears is 3-6 months?

Right now it seems like it. Details are a little fuzzy though. There are a number of people on the six month side that don't appear to have paid in full up front. Most that did are on the lower side of that range I believe.

I'm not worried about it though. I'm in no huge rush, and I know the product will be worth it.

Wow that's insane. I could maybe see 2-3 max for something like this, but six months is just crazy. When I was doing some research it looked like the main appeal to the Moser M9 was the quick turn around. If it wasn't for that I think MWC would have the market cornered on these fab 9's

Oh okay that makes sense. The way you said it made it sound like it was an accident or something lol. So it sounds like you left that job after you placed that order then. Definitely a good thing you left on good terms considering this lol

The 10 bolt will always be on borrowed time. I don't enjoy breaking down, or spending money twice, so I went straight to an S60.
