Default Can I leave the cover open on 10 bolt for a while?

If I open the cover on my 10 bolt and drain the oil, how long can I leave the housing open without oil without causing and damage or corrosion?

A long time as long as its not in the rain. It will have residual gear oil covering everything to keep it from rusting.

Ok cool, thanks.

You seem to be the man when it comes to diy rebuilds. Do you happen to have any write ups? I just picked up a replacement 10 bolt, but I’m thinking about tearing apart my current one to see what’s going on with it.

Actually Ive never done one but I have thought about it a bunch of times. I did a buddies 10 bolt last Sunday and considered it, but since I was pressed for time I opted out of it. If i did it I would want it to be thorough and accurate, and I just didnt have time last week. You can always PM me if you have a specific question.

Ok thanks, appreciate it. I’m gonna start with YouTube and see where that gets me. I know basically nothing about these damn things but I figure it might be a decent winter project to play around with.

Sold on the old rear, if I spin one tire by hand, the other one doesn’t move. Bad posi?

NO. 99s' and later came with a Torsen 'posi',they don't act/react like the Auburn/Eaton posi you're probably familiar with.

I thought with the torsens if you spin one wheel, the other is supposed to spin in the opposite direction. That’s how the replacement acts, which is a torsen out of an 01.

Either way, it growls like crazy, so something is toast.

I agree, but the oil will also trap airborne particulate (dust, sawdust, metal grindings, etc) which for me is enough reason to at least loosely attach the cover with a few finger-tight bolts. Whatever parts come out should be bagged to keep them clean. If you don't have a cover, throw some Seran/plastic wrap over it.

I always spray the housings and internals out with brake parts cleaner before reassembly. Not too concerned with dust or dirt as long as its sitting and not being run.

Diff covers left off for over 12 hours cause instant rear end explosions.

Why not just finger tight a couple of bolts in? Takes seconds.

That’s what I ended up doing. More of just a curiosity thing while I’m tinkering with it.

Quick Reply: Can I leave the cover open on 10 bolt for a while?
