Default Rear Differential Gasket Choices

I have a 2001 Z28 with ~40,500 miles and a stock 10-bolt. To the best of my knowledge I am going to assume that my rear differential oil was never changed by the previous owner. I know that when you change the rear diff oil, you need a gasket. However which kind of gasket is better: RTV silicon or a Fel Pro gasket? Or does it even matter??

PS: I have never changed my rear diff fluid before; this will be my first time. I just want to have everything ready for when I do change it

I like the rubber gasket with a slight smear of Ultra Black RTV on each side. Tighten, wait a while, and re tighten. It wont leak, ever.

lube locker gasket all the way. A little pricey, but 100% worth it. Yes it is re-usable and never had one leak. no issues with sticking gasket pieces or silicone to scrape off.

I'm going to have to eat my words on that one. I have one for my 9", and have used them in dana axles, just assumed they made a 10 -bolt version, but they only make an 8.5" version according to their website.

When you had the leak, did you use just the gasket by itself??

Lots of people don't use gaskets.
Use black rtv, finger tight and let set for half hour then tighten down, good to go.

Black RTV made for rear ends. Put a bead along the cover, let it sit for a while, install hand tight, wait some more then tighten. No gasket needed.

I mean I guess I could use both just to be safe...

By the way, did you guys have any trouble removing the diff cover with the sway bar in the way? I took a quick look underneath today and the sway bar looks like it could get really annoying while changing the gear oil.

I added a drain plug to the housings on my jeep, way less mess.. on my Dana axles I use a sheet of card stock and peen a gasket off the housing, then use Oil rated permatex red silicone. Drain the diffs twice a year if I'm wheeling it, pull the cover about once a year unless it ends up submerged in mud.. almost 300 K on the axles and no issues.

What I don't get is if the entire oil gets drained or just most of it. I bought one of the cheap one from O'reilly since mine was old and had a leak. What are your experiences with them draining the oil?
