8.8 Pattern

Decided to tackle an 8.8 this is my second attempt pattern check, first being .032. I just wanted to confirm my current work, So far it seems too shallow. Should I go in increments of .002 or jump to .005 and then slowdown to .002 at a time once I get the pattern closer? Current depth is .034 Trying to sharpen my gearing skills, I've learned a lot from the 3 I've done so far thanks to you guys.

Thanks in advance

Definitely too shallow. 2 should make it more acceptable, 4 is probably gonna get it right or a tad too deep. Will have to try one and see how you end up.

erickk120 06-13-2018 12:48 PM

Tried .038 and it barely moved deeper, so I decided to jump the gun all the way to .043 and it moved a little bit deeper, I still think its a tad too shallow, what do you think?

Yeah the drive side is going off the tooth a tad. Coast looks pretty centered. Needs a little deeper. I almost always end up in the mid 30s range.

I think it might be .043, that last pattern was on the loose end of the backlash, spec being 6-10 that was at .010 I tried .045 and the coast looked like a half moon which I assume indicates too deep. So my plan is to go back to .043 and try a tighter backlash range like .007 tomorrow and see if it looks any better, Also I forgot to mention I didn't have the axles in to act as preload during any of the currently posted ones, so I tried that for the .046 and looked too deep, so I will go back and use the axles as preload see if it wipes any better with that and lower backlash.

I forgot to add, doesn't backlash also affect depth in the slightest like a tiny bit? Because I feel that if I try the 043 with tighter backlash I might be into something. Sorry am still a noob at this.

45 looks like the best youre gonna get, id run that. Look closer, that coast is not a half moon, its centered. Focus on the whole design, where it smudges as a whole, then where its focused and clean. Study each tooth cause they all tell you something just a little different, or confirm what you are already thinking. That coast is money.

Mine ended up around .043 with .009 backlash . I thought it was too much shim , but the my pattern was the best there.

If you can find one,, the factory DANA Spicer manual on rear end setup is really really good.
Its OLD, they are kinda hard to find, but the explanation and whatnot in them is top shelf as
far as getting the pattern to play nice. (I realize your doing a 8.8 but the manual helps with about any rear end.)

I always start with whatever shims the prior carrier had both pinion and side shims, in the D44
Ive seldom had to do anything to get a pattern. The CNC tech that modern gear sets and housings
are made with has made it much easier. (Anything made after the mid 90's..

I see what you are saying now, Yeah the first tooth on the coast looks pretty good, I will paint more teeth tomorrow and see what the average looks like with more load in the ring gear. The drive has moved deeper in that one which was my problem with less shim, but it doesn't seem to spit a readable shape if it makes sense.

Thinned out the compound with oil, and tried to apply more load to pinion this time, Same 8-9 bl and depth. I also took negative side pattern pics. The coast I'm happy with, The drive I can't see the shape from heel to toe properly but seems to be deep enough centered between face and flank, I think I will run this unless there is an objection, from what I've seen so far it's the coast that if not set properly tends to whine, ask me how I know :)

Drive side is a smidge high but still very acceptable, nice and centered and should be dead silent with proper break in.

Honestly those are the best marks ive seen in a while. I just shoot for .009 on the dial and call it good. Im just a nobody shadetree, though.
