Default Do the V6 and V8's have the same rear end?

I just bought a stock rear end from a salvage yard for my 98TA and on the bill it's got a VIN from the car that it came out of.....after decoding it, it looks to be from a 2000 V6 camaro. Are the rears the same or do I have to raise hell now?

Thanks!

Yes, they are the same for the most part. I believe V6's might've gotten different gear ratios, at least for the autos. Also not all V6's had came with a limited slip diff. Other than that, dimensionally and such, they are exact.

Thank You for the info!

I did a little more searching and found out it has 3:08 gears. My car had 3:42's before I wrecked it. Am I going to need a computer change? And how big a difference will I notice between the ratio's?

you will notice a difference , you'll get better gas mileage but a loss of ET at the strip. probably will have to reprogram computer for it too.

It's not posi either. The posi rear end was either a 3.23 (manual) or 3.42 (auto) in a V6. You'll be smokin' one tire and not going anywhere.

I had a 98 y87 for a year, and that had a 3.23 LSD rear, and it was auto.

I don't think that's correct.

V6: all manuals 3.23 open or posi, auto is 3.08 open diff, 3.42 posi.

V8: all manuals 3.42, autos 2.97 or 3.23 all of them posi (I had a 98 Trans Am M6 too)

Bottom line: ALL 3.42's are posi and ALL 3.08's are OPEN. Unless you want an open diff on a V8 car I wouldn't use it.

you wont like open wheeler after a while, or the way your car feels boggy on take off with 3.08.
