3.73's on a 10bolt?

Would it be safe to run 3.73's in a stock 10bolt? I know i am risking shreeding teeth and all that if I throw in 4.10's in a 10bolt. I heard the TR224 is awesome with 3.73's over stock. Any info? thanks

Nothing is safe in New York....Look what happened to the Yankees. BTW, You'll love 3.73's. If it's a M6, you'll love 4.10's even better. :jest: :jest: WJ

I am running 3.73's on my stock rearend and loving it, yea sure i get 2.4 60' times but the burnouts are well worth it.

3.73s in 10 bolt are fine!
Since you have a 6 speed, I would suggest 4.10s, just my .02

i had 3.73 in my old 10 bolt and i liked them alot. i like my 12 bolt with the 4.11's even more.

let me rephrase the question.

How much stronger are 3.73s in a 10 bolt compared to 4.10s in a 10bolt?

BOWTIE Jan 15, 2005 07:29 PM

Here is a link that describes why the higher ratio gears are weaker... Hopefully this will help someone out. http://www.randysringandpinion.com/c...lt.asp?pid=125
Keep in mind our stock gears are like 7.6" diameter.

i got 3.73s on a stock ten bolt (M6). no problems at all. my car is daily driven and i do alot of highway driving so i went with 3.73s. this is a real fun gear! :) i wish i could of gone a little higher like 3.90s.

Jimm Jan 17, 2005 02:44 PM

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think 3.90s are available on our stock 10 bolt.

The gear change is not what makes the rear end weeker, its how well you hook up to the ground that puts the stress to the rear end. if you have a M6 you will not have much give between the moter and the trans. an A4 will slip some. this is safer for the rear end. Say with a M6 and a sticky set of tires, you will put a lot of strain on your rear end.

Higher numeric ratios weaken the rear because
a- the pinion is smaller
b- it multiplies more torque
Those are the two main reasons. But, anything else that would give you a similar gain would also put more stress on the rear (stall, exhaust, cam, anything that adds hp/tq).

I've been running 3.73's now for about a year.
This is my 3rd rear end. I ran 4.10's before this. They were sick a lot of fun but didn't last nearly as long as these 3.73's are lasting.
You really shouldn't have any issues.
You'll enjoy it a lot.

Just went from 2.73 10 bolt to 3.73 10 bolt this past weekend and OMG is it awesome. I would have done this a long time ago if I would have known it was gonna make this much of a difference. Now I have to find some better tread though, My worn out Nittos are not hooking.

You will have to change your carrier for a 3.73 if you have a 3.08. Either that or thick gear/ spacer.
