Default 4.10's in a stock A4 rearend?

Is it worth it or should I just go with 3.73's?

Go with 3.73s. I put 4.10s in my Buick behind a built 4L60, and I definitly wish I hadn't. Twisting way to hard going down the highway. Plus, I've been told by a friend who builds performance trannys for a living that 4.10s mess up the computer on our cars. Something about how the computer figures shift points, line pressures, etc. I don't remember the exact details.

4.10s are way to much gear for a auto. Your gains will be small and 3.73s will be much more enjoyable. I personally have 3.89s and love them.

I have 4:10's in my TA and I like 'em so far. Although my car is driven maybe 4000 miles per year and no highway duty. I went with them because most street races (forgive me, lord) around here don't last that long. On the highway RPM's are 3000 @ 72mph. It definatly rocks in the 1/8 mile though!!!

I have 3.73 I run 2400 at 70 mph I only get 200 miles to a tank. First gear is very short and is too much for my street tires. I would not go any higher. I make 311 rwhp.

what are your mods and what are your goals. You're getting advice in a vacuum.

currently ive just got headers, exhaust, lid, maf, stuff like that, just bolt ons and just looking to get alittle more kick in the car. It's a A4 and I really dont want to mess with a stall so I'm looking at gears.

I have GM 4.10s in my A4. Right now I am putting down 309tq and 301hp. The car came with 2.73s and I put 3.42s. The 3.42s was alright but we only have 1/8 mile track close to the house. I also like to run on the street. My best so far is 8.32 with 1.90 60'. As for the highway I don't think its that bad myself.

Dont go higher than 3.73's. I drove my friends car up to Roswell NM from El Paso tx and hated every moment of it. It ran too hot because of the high rpm I was cruising at going speed limit.

If you're running typical street tires, 3.42s or 3.73s are plenty.

You be smarter to mess with a converter. More gain, less risk.

BTW, 4.10s do not mess up our computers anymore than switching to 3.73s. Once you switch gears, you can get the most enjoyment when you have full control over all of the shift tables using a programmer like HPTuners.

Where's the extra risk in gears?

I just upgraded to 3.73 from 3.46 and the jury is still out whether they are better. I have a stock stall A4. My engine is unopened. The 3.73s are a little noisier around 35-40MPH due to the gearing but not that bad. They are certainly much better for 30MPH rolling starts and with my GSD3s I can hold it from a standing flash at the track - stall it up and its bye bye. Cruising at 60MPH 3rd gear is now excellent for overtaking. Surprisingly I am getting better mileage than the 3.46.

I am torn. I love my 3.46 and with the right stall will make an awesome combo. But with the 3.73 and a small cam Im not convinced I will need a stall for the street. Either combo will generate mucho mombo.

You decide and tell me.
