Default "Breaking Rear End"

We all know the 10bolt sucks for power..my real question is..when you "Break" the rear end..what all has to be replaced? Do the axle shafts usually just break..or what?

Depends on what breaks first. Usually not the housing, but I have seen the main caps (rare), posi (more often), ring and pinion (My buddy just broke the stem off of his US gear pinion gear, snapped it right off, in a 9 inch), axle ends.

The 7.5 10 bolt is common for housing flex and carrier failure. I've heard of gears failing to, but a lot of that can have to do with the size of the gear and the install of it. One of the reasons for housing flex is when they welded the tubes onto the center housing they merely tach welded them on, so a starting point would be to lay a solid bead all the way around it, to completely eliminate housing flex you need a truss of course, next is carrier, a lot of people use eaton and auburn LSD's but in high torque load situations they seem like time bombs. I'd look into a detroit C locker or spool. With all this money (which should barely exceed a grand), time and work, your still gonna end up with a 28 spline axle, kinda like pouring syrup on a turd and calling it a pancake. The 10 bolts have potential when beefed and setup properly, I've heard of a few people laying 500 rwhp on slicks (thats spraying out of the hole) and havent busted there's yet with the above setup (truss, detroit, girdle, and forged axleshafts), its hit or miss with each application.

Usually the posi and/or the ring & pinion goes first... on my 10 bolt the posi was fine, but 8 teeth got sheared off the ring gear.

I've been told spending money on the 10 bolt is like buying fuel addtive, a waste. So how much money is what's needed ie axles, carrier, support, etc. I've heard nothing but problems out of Mosers and even some Stranges.

i had my axles tubes welded... after that, i've broken 3 differntials, 2 of the tmes they have actually exploded. one time, it broke one of the stock axles. i now upgraded to moser axles, they are holding up fine. I still have the factory ring and pinion 3.42's they still look bran new.

as long as you stay you stay with 3.42's or > the only weak link is the differntials. ive gone through a torsen, an alburn pro and an eaton.

never felt like droping such a large amount of $ on a 12 bolt.

Man the killer on these 10 bolts is the ring gear if you go beyond a 3.42 ratio and the differential. The main cause of destruction is wheel hop on the launch. I researched the weak links and built mine to last and it did exactly that.

I managed 1.43 60fts and multiple 1.45-1.48 60fts by building it right. Every component has a breaking point hands down. I pushed the breaking point to a level that even surprised me. It's still extremely solid and quiet as a mouse.

I installed an Eaton H/D posi unit (clutch pack type that is rebuildable). I welded the axle tubes. I kept the indestructable 3.23 GM gears, added an aluminum TA stud and girdle kit for support and had a solid pinion spacer to eliminate internal pinion movement. I also added LCA relaoction brackets to eliminate wheel hop. I spent about $1100.00 on it, but I didn't have the funds for a 12 bolt at the time. It never broke. 1BadZ pulled 1.3 60 fts with an identical unit lauching on the gas out of the hole. I stayed NA and drove to and from the track.

I did recently install a Mosier 12 bolt so the 10 bolt is up for sale. I have added a bit more HP and didn't wnat to test the maximum limits of the 10 bolt ($600.00)

The 10 bolts are lighter and faster if your HP is with in it's boundaries. The 12 bolt absorbs about 15 RWHP. I should have tested the 10 bolts boundaries.LOL.

^Yeah, I agree. you can do a shitload of upgrades to the 7.5 but you still have the same small gear set. In the 3 that I have closly seen fail the gear set was the problem.
