Default Pinion washer broke

Do you guys have any idea what would cause a pinion washer to break? I have a new strange rear with about 800 miles on it. The rear went through a proper 500 mile break in. Around that time when the fluid was due to be changed there was a small leak. Wasn't sure if it was the pinion or cover so we just resealed the cover and agreed I would drive to car to see if it continued to leak or if resealing the cover worked. About a week went by and the rear started to leak a lot of fluid. I took it back for what we tought would be a simple pinion seal replacement and found the washer had shattered. Only two pieces of the washer were left. Keep in mind I still have been driving the car very easy. I'm hoping this is just a freak event becuase other than this problem the rear as been whisper quite. Any ideas what would cause this?

Cheap aftermarket steel, probably an import.

I was thinking along similar lines that maybe the washer was never heat treated and the cycles I put the rear through caused it to crack and fall apart.
