anyone have some pros and cons before i do my gear change?

fyi- i got GM 3.73 upgrading from 3.23. many say they will be louder, rev higher, lose topend, make my engine work harder, waste lots more gas, feel like im going faster (ie: im going 70 feels like im going 100) ...etc

i like driving highway..dont mind too much on gas loss. but i dont want any of the others mentioned above?:help:

on a scale of 1-10. 10 being highest. how much of a diff will i notice in performance to 3.73 and how much in noise, and higher rev etc..

It won't rever higher, it WILL rev faster. You will lose some top end, but how often do you do 150+? You will losed some gas mileage, but it actually isn't that bad on the highway. Since you will be reving higher in each gear it can be said that it will be making the engine work harder, but again with your gear choices the difference isn't anything to worry about. It does not feel like you are going faster, but the engine will be reving more so it will sound that way at first, then you'll get used to it.

Hope that helps.

thats interesting jmdale.....i was curious about that considering my car seems to get better gas mileage if i drive 75 in 6th rather than 65. plus if you use a taller gear, seems like you'd be able to use a higher gear sooner in the city so gas mileage would actually go somewhat up in the city (like using 5th at 40mph instead of 45 and using 6th at 60 instead of 65 or 70)

Default have not seen performance gains here 3.23 to 3.73s

3.23s to 3.73 performance gains? I have not seen the gains from this in a performance aspect in any of these posts. I would like an average gain in the 1/4 from this. I am running 10.7 - 10.8s @ 125mph with 28" tires, 3800 stall and spray with the 3.23s and would like to know how much the 3.73s would help.

Have an M6 with the 3.42's in it. I normally drive in the country/city and dont normally go over 45. Occasionally I will drive highway though 60-75. Would it be a smart choice to put in 4.10's? It seems like if I keep the 3.42's I wont even be using 5th and 6th like at all.

I wouldn't change it with that Torque Converter. If you do, don't go over 3.73, IMO.

ok, not seeing anything in here about anybody doing 3.90s in an A4? I have a set of Motive 3.90s waiting to go in my car right now once the install kit gets here. My car is an A4 witjout a Stall. Later on down the road i will be doing a yank SS3600 but thats not for awhile. Has anybody done this before? Im coming off 3.23s and i wanted to get the most out of gears in the 1/4, thats why i didnt do 3.73s. 4.10s definatly werent an option though.

3.90 vs. 4.10 on a DD 96 t/a M6.? which one... says 3.90 needs an aftermarket rear... so i was thinking of going that way to replace the 10bolt.

and you said WS6 and SS came with 3.23s? you mean a4s only right?

that chart does not seem right at all for the M6s. theres no way with 4.10 gears u can do 40 in first gear (at redline)

On my 2003 Z06 I put 390 gears in and knocked 3 tenths off the 1/4 time... Best bank for the buck... I guess it depends on the car but it was awsome and didnt change gas mile too much , I cant go 200mph anymore but who cares 170 is fast enough

As a note, not that it really matters, but the original thread states no 3.42s with A4 - Y87 V6s came with 3.42s and A4s.

for you M6 guys,

I went from stock 3.42's to 4.56's. My old TA made 431 rwhp 418 torque - stock 317 rwhp

3.42's you could almost never use 6th gear.
4.56's you can use 6th gear on the highway

3.42's mpg around 28-29 highway (3 trips over 2000 miles on stock motor)
4.56's mpg around 25 highway (trip from KC to Kentucky)

3.42's at the track on 17" 315 Nittos - 1/4 mile in 3rd gear
4.56's at the track on 28" Slicks - 1/4 mile in 4th gear

I had the Granatelli 200mph Speedo because I kept burying the speedo
3.42's top speed on highway between Boise and St Lake City - 188mph (431 rwhp - stock rear)
4.56's top speed on highway 155

3.42's - 1st gear - lots of cam surge in rush hour traffic with modded motor
4.56's - 1st gear - much better because motor was spinning at higher rpm in rush hour no cam surge

A little background on the car.

Bought brand new and had it dynoed after breakin and then went a little mod crazy.

1 - had the motor built heads/cam/headers/other items
2 - ran it on stock rear end (mooded motor) at track on nittos until rear end gave out
3 - replaced rear end with moser 4.56's
4 - ran at track with 4.56's and 28 inch slicks

drove it with the 315 nittos to work every day in downtown rush hour traffic with the 4.56's
