broken rear end: how big of a deal?
Since I bought the Camaro, all I ever hear is, "you're going to break the rear end". "Have you broken the rear end yet?" etc.
My question is this: How big of a deal is breaking it. When I DO break the rear end, which part actually breaks? Is it just the gears? Can I say, "damn, broke the rear, gotta buy some 4.10s now."

sorry, no most of the time you have to replace the entire rear. this is due to if your out doing stuff to break a rear you need alot stronger one. so people go with the 9" or 12". the only way you will break it is if you ahve some really good tires and do some heavy lauches on them. say 4000 rpm or so.

you mean 9" or 12 bolt. LOL just given you ****. but yea you want to replace everything if you break it. my philosophy is when it breaks time to upgrade however at the moment I am beefing up my 10 bolt cause in my last car I went through 3 rearends while still under warrantee.

When the 10 bolt breaks there are three usual suspects. The ring and pinion gears can crack of shear off teeth. The axles can twist and break at the splines. Or the carrier can break (usually the spider gears inside). You can usually replace any of these parts for anywhere from 200 to 500 bucks, but it wont eliminate the chance of it happening again.

Everywhere I have looked the rears cost around 2300.

I replaced my 10-Bolt earlier in the year with a MOSER 9".
The only reason I went with the 9" instead of the 12-Bolt is the fact
that you can get Gear Ratios between the norm. Such as the 3.70's I went with.
Not bad for a Street/Strip setup for an A4.
The TOTAL cost of my 9" was $2470.00 just parts. But I had it beefed up.
33 Spline Axles
POSI --due to the Streetability
3.70 Race Gears---Kind of loud due to the cut angle of the gears.
1350 Yokes
Aluminum Center Section for weight reduction
Drain Plug----Yeah, you have to specify that you want one.
Several other ODD & INS.
Best MOD yet
