ported MAF's ??

Maybe I missed but where was the info about ported MAF's screwing up A4's. I know alot of people with A4s that have ported thier MAFs, including myself. I never would have done it if I thought it would somehow hurt my care. Not trying to lay blame anywhere just never heard this before.

Re: ported MAF's ??

The issue was caused by the fact that a ported MAF lowers the reported airflow through the MAF.

The engine calculates "load" based off the MAF readings - a lower airflow will lead to lower load readings.

These lower load numbers caused reduced line pressure to the transmission, increase wear and leading to other problems.

At lest that is how i understand it.

Did some people not have success by reportedly turning their MAFs around backwards?

If I remember correctly, it solved problems with the converter locking and unlocking.

Haven't seen anything about it in a while.

This rumor seems to go around every now and then. I had a ported MAF on my 1996 LT1, and am currently using one on my 1999 A4. never have had a problem on either, granted the 1999 only has 21,000 mi. on it. The 1996 had 85,000 mi. on it, no problem. If any has had a bad experience with one, other than performance related, please let me know.

Chris is correct.

Problems: It can lead to glazing of the clutches in the TC and contribute to burning up tranny clutches. Doesn't happen to everybody, but it has happened to some.

Turning the MAF around is not a longterm solution IMO, I'd rather correct the underlying problem.

Re: ported MAF's ??

So would an LS6 85mm MAF "tuned" for an LS1 be the correct way to go about getting more air or does that still present problems?

On a side note, if I were to plan my setup for a supercharger, I would want the screen to remain intack, correct?

Why can't someone produce some ends WITH the screen but without the airfoil? <img src="graemlins/gr_judge.gif" border="0" alt="[judgement]" />
