rear end leaks like crazy, driveshaft throws fluid everywhere
it looks like the front of my diff is leaking pretty bad. it has always leaked a little bit but now its leaking so bad that when i'm sitting at a stoplight i'll start smelling differential fluid, and when i park in the garage the whole garage smells that way.
how difficult is it to replace that seal and how much should i expect to pay to have it replaced at a shop or at a dealer?

The seal may not be the root of the problem. Seals
need the shaft to run true or they will get kicked off
seat and weep with every revolution. Excessive pinion
play (like a beaten-down crush spacer or bad driveline
vibration) could be the deal.
Replacing it will need you to get the pinion yoke off,
which wants air tools and the right size socket. Seal
itself is simple & cheap. But if the problem is like what
I mention you could be in for more.
Drop the driveshaft and see if you can feel any play
at all in the pinion. Note while driving whether you can
detect any speed-proportional or load-proportional
vibration.

Check the FAQ at the top of the page for more information.
If you are not familiar with rear ends this is not something you want to attempt, because you may be changing the way the gears are meshing without even realizing it, and then you've got a huge problem on your hands.
When they take the driveshaft out they will be able to pull on the yoke to see if there is any play in it (i.e. collapsed sleeve, bad bearing etc) like jimmyblue mentioned. Chances are though it is just the seal, they go bad all the time and will make a big old mess in the tunnel of the rear. It gets flung all over the exhaust too so it can be a little smelly.
The seal itself is less than $5. The labor may be a bit more expensive because it requires a decent bit of knowledge to complete.

When I disconnect the driveshaft to check for play, am I checking for up/down, left/right or play in turning?
Also, is there a correct way to re-torque the bolts when putting the driveshaft back in? Is loctite a good idea or is it not necessary?
I won't try to replace the seal itself, I really don't know much about the process other than its not as easy as just tightening a few bolts.
As for vibration while driving, there is none at all. The car is silk smooth even at 90mph thanks to freshly balanced tires
I will try checking for play tonight. Thanks for your help!

well i unbolted the driveshaft and that yoke won't move any directions other than turning, so its not loose its just leaking.
how much does it usually run for a dealer or a shop to change it out? and how long does it take?
