Gear Problem

Had bad gear install done on my 1998 Z. Had my Motive 3:73's installed twice. When I got the car back after the second install, it was making a loud whine & howl sound. Worse then it was the first time. My car is now losing power, and does not feel right when it shifts. Could the gears be torn up already? How much longer can I expect the rearend to last before these gears break? All help appreciated.

Re: Gear Problem

The whine itself means that the gears are misalingned, BUT it doesn't necessairly meant that it will hurt the gears. The speed at which the gears move is incredible. I've installed gears and it's takes effort to align them. It is almost always the shops fault if they make noise. Once I threw them inthere and missed just one measurement out of many. And missed it slightly and they made little noise. Not much, but I wasn't happy. Just keep taking them back or get a refund and go elsewhere. DO NOT drive like this if you want to reuse those gears. They will break in this way and ALWAYS whine even if aligned correctly later. I drove on whiny gears for a few years. I was young and dumb. It didn't hurt anything but my ears. If they're seriously misaligned then the rear end will fail fast if not right away. Do they whine on acceleration and coast? That would mean they didn't spend much time on aligning if any.

Here is some info on aligning. You can question them using my numbers to see what exactly they did.

Hope this helps.

Re: Gear Problem

They whine pretty much all the time except under 15 mph. From that point up it just gets louder and louder. They were noisy after they were installed the first time, but the shop added a noise after working on them the second time. Reminds me of a tornado siren. I've been real easy on acceleration lately, but feel it's just a matter of time before something goes out. Just hope it isn't too soon.
