Changing back to 2.73 gear from 3.73..Question
Yes i know this sounds stupid but I have my reasons...1. With an A4 TA gas mileage will increase a massive amount. 2. My 10 bolt rear end life will be longer. 3. Cannot afford a 12 bolt right now and i already have the 2.73 gear. Only question i need is for my torque converter. im running a fuddle 3400 stall is this going to be ok with the 2.73? or am i going to run into problems...i plan on dyno tuning the car immediatley after.

i would recommend 3.08's. they'll be faster than 2.73's, wear on the tranny less and likely give you better gas mileage. 3.08's do better in the city than 2.73's and will give you relatively unchanged mpg on the highway.

sure they will. i see no reason why they wouldn't. gear swaps are usually a moot point after a stall anyway. there's little performance to be gained, just better driveability. i'd keep what you got. the only thing you have to lose is trips to the pump.

FWIW, I've run 3.73's and 4.10's (the 4.10's for much longer) in my '02 Z28 that was originally 2.73's, and yet I've hardly seen big gains or losses in fuel mileage between all these gear sets! The most I ever got ONCE on a tank of fuel was ~310 miles, and that was with 2.73's, but that was BABYING the car down the highway. Otherwise, all of my driving is a mix of city/hwy, and even with the 4.10's I'm able to get ~230 miles/tank on average, which is the exact same as I normally averaged with 2.73's!
Last summer, I put the 2.73's back in to try to save fuel (bought a cottage and was driving north a lot) and yet I wasn't seeing the improvements in fuel mileage, but I sure felt the loss off the line.
IMO, unless you do a lot of long-haul, highway cruising (where you're not in stop-and-go or anything) then you probably won't see much of a difference.
