Default Power Loss Difference between 12 bolt and 9”?

I am planning on ordering a 9” this afternoon with a 3:89 gear. I currently have a stock 12 bolt with 3:23 and am making 400RWHP, 379RWTQ.

So, I have heard that the 9” takes more of your power than a 12 bolt. The 9” is a little heavier too but I am taking the Alum center section option so it will end up at about the same weight as the 12 bolt.

I am looking for people to pipe in with why more people are now going with 9” rears in their 4 gen F-Bodies than the 12 bolt?

Also, is it true about the power loss difference? Actually 3% would not be that much considering 12 RWHP loss would put me still at the 390RWHP mark. If the 9” zaps more RWHP doe sit also take more of your RWTQ?

Thanks,

Bill

It's really not a huge deal. If you are making enough power to warrant an aftermarket rear end, you are not going to miss the 5-10hp a 9 inch robs over a 12 bolt.

Thank You!

That is what I was thinking too. That plus the ease of use to swap out the gears by removing the whole unit and putting it on a bench. swapping gears, and then putting it back in. Not that I would do it myself but it sounds easier.

My stock drive shaft should work with the 9", right?

Thanks,

Bill

Sorry Bill I can't tell you about the driveshaft as I went with a 12 bolt, but surely someone with a 9 inch will chime in.

Depends on the pinion yoke.... length and joint sizing.

I lost 8rwhp and 10rwtq from a moser 12 bolt to a moser 9in, and the stock driveshaft will work as long as you change the u joint, it might sit a bit short with a short pinion yoke but should still be fine. #'s in sig are with the 12bolt
