Default Ohh ****..... Im fu*ked

I was just driving home and I hear a pop in the rear of my car. And I start to accelerate and the whole car was shaking, I could feel it in my foot also. I think I just blew out my 4:10's....

yeah the fluid will drain out.
and what will it look like when gears go out?
a big chunk of metal missing from the ring gear, or pinion, though usually ring.
sounds like you shouldnt be worried about getting more fluid considering the gears are toast.

probably broke the carrier since it's still going down the road OK other than the shake. The gears will be gone soon if you don't shut it down. Then again, with the carrier shattered/cracked the gears are junk anyway. Time for an Auburn pro carrier and a new set of 4.10's!!!

eh, sometimes. I broke my 4.33's launching at the track and actually made it all the way down the 1/4 mile, turned around, down the return lane and into the pits with 5-6 teeth missing off the ring gear and 2-3 off the pinion gear. If you break them while your moving, if you keep moving you'll be able to drive it, it'll just be really really bad sounding, lol.

the ones I break always go on the line and end up moving a few feet, then stops...move a few feet a stop....... had one I broke in a 12 bolt years ago went down the track a ways, decided to lock when I hit high gear(glide) ended up breaking the driveshaft and trans case as well when it did....real exciting ride though!!!! I don't know what was wilder, the vibration, the BANG when it all decided to exit the bottom of the car or the good wiggle I got when the tires oiled down. Needless to say the other guys at the track were none too happy with me..... I would have to agree with them though, I hate oil downs. Especially synthetic rearend grease ones!!

i feel for you man...

i torched my 4.10s....and when i drove it home ended up lockin up synchros 1 and 2. at a dead stop i could shift into all gears, once i was rolling, could not get back in them til a dead stop again. so, at all costs do not drive the car til the new gears are in.....

I was lucky when my 4.10's went ... the car actually made it home (about ~20 miles) under its own steam, and all that went were 2 teeth off the pinion. That was after a couple hard days on a road course, mind you!

...then ~2 weeks later and 2nd gear started slipping, so just last night I finished up the A4 --> M6 swap!!

When my 4.10's went, I put back the original 3.23's to that carrier. I cleaned and inspected all the bearings really well, and they all looked good still, so I re-used them. The shims can be cleaned and re-used without a problem, but they may not be the right thickness you need anyway to go back to the stock gears.
