3.73's or 4.10's?
Im trying to decide on which to put in my 01 WS6 (M6). Keep in mind this IS a daily driver (for now, at least till i find another DD) And i dont want to get bad gas mileage either.
I had an 00 GT with 4.10s and i absolutely LOVED the way it pulled!! But i didnt like shifting so much. Also they had an ANNOYING A$$ whine to them!
Oh and BTW this will be a nitrous car until im finished with my custom fab turbo set up.
Thanks for the help ahead of time!!

With 4.10's what rpm are you in at 65mph in 6th gear, I do alot of highway driving to get to and from work.
So will it feel the same as my GT did or a lil different cause I have a 6th gear to go into?
Also will i feel a noticeable amount of difference? Also how does the stock rear ends hold up to 4.10's?

It depends on your future power updates. With big cid engines or power adders, my opinion is that 4.10's are a little bit too much for street use, mainly because of traction issues (althrough they are great gears for stock to h/c engines). And if you drag race your car, you will hit the limiter at around 115 to 118 in 4th gear (depend on where your limiter is set), so if your trap speed is higher than that, you will have to grab 5th gear before the traps.
I had GM 4.10's with my stock engine and I really loved those gears (shifting often was not too bad). Traction was ok in 1st gear but I could spin the tires from time to time. The car pulled really harder in each gears. I did, however, lost 4 mpg on highway, but since I was now able to use 5th gear in city driving, it compensates a little. At 75 mph, I was at 2000 rpm in 6th. In fact, the biggest drawback was that they were howling like crazy after only a few track passes.
Now I have a 383 stroker with a lot more torque, and a Moser 12-bolt, and I had to go back to 3.73's to regain some traction. Even then, and with a full suspension setup, I will spin my 275/40ZR17 all the way through 1st gear on the street, and sometimes even my drag radials at the track. For me, it would have been a nightmare to stay with the 4.10's with the stroker. And with the stroker engine and 3.73's, I even have a better fuel consumption than what I got with my stock LS1 and 4.10's on the highway.
As for the rear end holding up, it should be ok for normal street use. With street tires, you will break traction or slip the clutch before destroying your 10-bolt. But if you intend to run sticky tires at the track with a good clutch, then I would look at a 12-bolt or 9" instead.
Hope this help...

why not try 3.90?
i had 4.10 in my 10 bolt but went to 3.73 in my 12 bolt when i put more power to the car and now im gonna swap to 3.90.
with full bolt ons and exauhst i had big time traction issues with 4.10's.

Dont waste your time with anything less than a 4.10 in a 6 speed. Your rpm in 6th will not change much because its geared so high.
I think 70mph was 1500-1700 in 6th before I took the 6 speed out. I think 90mph was 2500. Basicly even with 4.10 gears you will still be turning less rpm's in high gear than an automatic car with stock gears.

I love my 4.10s. I had them and the Stage 3 put in at the same time and it's like a different car . All this with the DRs and now my car launches on the street like a mother. As far as whinning goes, it depends on the brand and who puts them in. There is a speed shop here that told me they will put nothing but GM gears in because they had such a problem with people complaining about the whine. Mine do whine a little bit on the Highway when I'm doing higher speeds (55-65) at lower RPMs. When I'm going 70 in 6th gear i'm under 1800RPMs

ive had both, and there is a noticeable diff in pull factor. since i live where theres a ton of traffic (especially on game days), the 3.73's workout better. my top end power is much better as well....especially with this cam.

You will not have to grab 5th gear on motor with 4:10s. However you will have to on the kit if you have one.

If you have a stock M6 with a 3.42 axle, you will be turning 1456 RPM in 6th on the highway.
If you make no other changes except to go to a 3.73, you'll be turning 1588 RPm in 6th at the same speed.
With a 4.10, you'll be turning 1745 ROM in 6th at 65 mph.
Personally, I just went from a 3.42 to a 3.73 involuntarilly. The pinion bearing ate itself up while I was driving from Texas to California, and I HAD to replace the bearings, gears, and axles. Just under $3000 since I also needed a Hypertech to calibrate the speedometer.
With the new 3.73s, I feel pretty safe saying I don't want or need 4.10s, but then again I don't street race ... I DO get on a road course every now and then, but street racing is just not my thing.
It accelerates a bit better and 6th is useable at a lower speed. Stock, I never used 6th until 60 mph or faster. Now I am in 6th at about 55 mph.
Good luck!

Go with 4.10s, I would go steeper if it wasnt for the 10 bolt I love ripping through the gears I have 4.10s, I let a buddy ride in my car who has a 01 SS with longtubes, lid etc., he is now ordering some gears for his car. It is a fairly significant seat of the pants feel.
