2.73's and 10bolt I'm about to do h/c on my car and was thinking about doing a gear change to a 3.42. How much longer would my 2.73's last than the 3.42's. And what kind of mph difference would i be seeing at the track. |
Get a Bigger stall, but if you must do the gear change your 10 bolt wont last long with 3.42s and the mods you are gonna have on top of that. I would suggest savin up for a 12 bolt rather than doing a gear change. |
This is going to be my DD at some point so I think I would lose some driveablity if i went to a 4k stall. |
youll lose more changin gears, your gas mileage will take a huge hit, and you have to worry about blowin up your rear end |
I agree that the 7.5 10 bolt isn't worth spending much money on. If you keep your eyes open you can pick up another rearend for a couple hundred bucks. I have saw a couple sell locally for as little as $100. Keep your 2.73 stocker in the garage as a spare. I just bought a 3.73 geared unit with 50,000 miles for less than the cost of new gears and a install kit, not to mention paying someone to set them up. |
Thats what i was thinking of doing, just swapping the whole rear out and saving my 2.73's like you said. This way if I grenade it, I always have my 2.73's to fall back on. |
Yeah try to save your 2.73 rear end. When I talked to my rear end guy about a gear change, he told me its not a good idea to put 3 series gear sets in a 2 series carrier in the 7.5" GM 10 bolt. He told me he would do it but I wouldnt be happy. |
What is it that would make you unhappy? I thought that unless your changing the actual gears out then there might be conflict. I'm going to change the whole rear out with a 3.42 |
well I have a 02 camaro a4 and it came with the 2.73s, the downside 2 keeping your 2.73s is that you will put alot of stress on your trans and it will eventually go. do the gear swap and select a good stall (vig or yank) and balance everything out. BTW Strange sells thicker gears u can use with your 2 series carrier. Good Luck |
See you already have a stall but I would personally do the gear swap...if you are a track fiend save up for the 12 bolt and do the H/C and 12 bolt at the same time. The ten bolt is weak but there are lucky guys out there running in the 10s with them :eek2:....Good luck |
My 2.73's held up to a 410 RWP H/C combo with a TNT Wet kit at 250 right out of the hole. Stock rear only added a Alum cover. Car went 11.082 @ 123 on the spray (car went through traps in 2nd trans wasnt wanting to shift) Josh |
crossed the line on the rev limiter at about 6900 trans was stuck would not shift even when i let off. |
