Moser 9" 3.73 Howling
I just had s Moser 9" 3.73 rear put in my SS and it howls like crazy from about 45mph and up.
I checked out http://www.ringpinion.com/diagnosing.shtml and found the problem/cause that best describes my situation. It says "Gear set howls as soon as installed - May be due to design or improper installation"
Also, I talked to a guy at Moser and he told me that between the normal noise from a 3.73 gear and the torque arm amplifying the noise that what I'm hearing is normal. This thing howls so loudly that I can hear it over the stereo even when I've got it cranked up fairly loud.
So my question is, Is the 3.73 gear normally that loud, or do I have a bad install in my center chunk and the guy from Moser is blowing smoke?

I don't know much about rears , but I do know I'd like to have that same set up. Let me know if you decide to throw in the towel. I'd love to get a deal on a bullet proof rear unit. I wish you luck. I know it's frustrating , but you will look back and laugh, plus you will learn a lot through this ordeal, trust me. Take care.

The deal with Moser gear whining is simply this. Some whine, some Don't. Some are at higher speeds, some at lower, some when decreasing, some when coasting. It doesnt mean the rear end is going to break or that its installed wrong. Its just luck of the draw.

Re: Moser 9" 3.73 Howling
Thanks guys, but what if I throw this into the mix. . .I had to teach a Mustang GT a little lesson tonight, it was the first time I've made an almost WOT run with the new rear (I put at least 150 miles normal driving on it prior to tonight).
Now, it makes a different noise (as well as the howl). The new noise is more of a grinding/crunching noise at all speeds (the howl was just between 45 and 80mph).
Does this sound like a usual/normal noise too?

I've had my Moser 9 inch for a few years...
IMO it's all in the setup.
My current setup has 4.10's and a locker and it's not so bad... it makes some noise but nothing like the first time i got the rearend. First time it sounded like a siren. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
If i ordered a 9" I would get the centersection assembled locally.

I agree with PSJ. It's in the setup. I have a Moser 9" with 4.57 and an aluminum center section. I have about 800 street miles on it with my 409. I have a poly trans mount and a poly TQ arm mount on my Random TQ arm. It is quiet as a mouse on acceleration an has a very faint whine on decel. I was told by the guy who set my gearset up that there are 2 optimal setups for gears.
1) drag race/strength (strongest, most pinion to ring contact) which will whine slightly on decel... (This is what I have.)
2) street/quiet setup for primarily street driving and shouldn't whine.
If you are having that much noise, there is definitely a problem in your setup. The bad thing is once gears are setup wrong and make noise, they will always be noisy. What posi do you have? Hopefully it isn't damaged as well.
Good Luck...

Re: Moser 9" 3.73 Howling
Is there any chance of having the ring and pinion re-set to eliminate the noise, or is the damage done and they'll have to be replaced to get rid if it?
Aslo, I've got the Trac-Loc posi.
Thanks
Chris
