It's whining.....

what could be making my stock rear whine? its pretty bad at all RPM's the car only has 20k miles on it, and maybe 10 passes with nittos and almost no mods done to the car...could my rear really be going out? or do you think im just due for a fluid change w/ gm posi additive??

xpndbl3 Jan 24, 2007 12:15 AM

you can try the fluid change, but i'm guessing the contact patch is messed up....it's 9" time

MeentSS02 Jan 24, 2007 12:17 AM

If it is whining, something got out of alignment somewhere. It'll only get worse from there. Mine is slowly starting to whine more and more with each passing day.

fuseone Jan 24, 2007 12:32 AM

does it do it in netrual

Magnet Jan 24, 2007 12:38 AM

no it doesnt do it in neutral.......but what do you guys mean something got out of alignment? couldn't it only get out of alignment if something broke??
i was banking on this rear lasting for awhile, they arent suppose to go out on a stockish auto car...atleast not at 20k miles could it be a bearing?? my best 60' is onyl 1.96 and mostly run 2.00's ....those shouldn't ahve broke my rear :(

Magnet Jan 24, 2007 12:40 AM

FWIW i would be going 12 bolt not 9'' :)

xpndbl3 Jan 24, 2007 12:41 AM

9" is better ;)

Magnet Jan 24, 2007 12:44 AM

not for an auto car...its just eating extra HP b/c im not gonna be running 9-10's for ALONG time :judge:

xpndbl3 Jan 24, 2007 01:06 AM

eh i've seen cars go back to back with the new strange 60 and a moser 9" and run within .05 of each other. The only reason I prefer the 9" is the cheap gear change prices if the car ever speeds up or slows down in mph at the track. Also I can grab one pumpkin for the strip and another if I take the car on a long highway cruise, I also run a TH350 so no overdrive here either.

Magnet Jan 24, 2007 01:24 AM

yes but by what i've seen the dana and 9in both rob more power than the 12 bolt and aren't necessary for a bolt-on A4 and possibly cam only...

its your pinion depth or back lash on the gears. my rear end whines like a bitch I checked the back lash and it was at .008" witch is good, but I noticed the pattern was off so that ment it was the pinion and setting the pinion suck so im going to try and blow it up. its a 12bolt

Things can move around in there...the crush-type pinion spacer would be my first guess. Nothing has to be broken...just bent enough to throw it off. Doesn't take much...

99zman Jan 24, 2007 02:23 PM

when you have it fixed you can have who does your work use a solid pinion spacer to help prevent the pattern being thrown off.

Magnet Jan 24, 2007 03:15 PM

i'm not sure if im gonna fix it or not...i might jsut deal with it until i can afford a 12bolt....how much do you think it will cost to have it fixed??

Depends on what needs to be replaced...the labor, regardless, will probably cost a fair amount.

Magnet Jan 24, 2007 09:58 PM

like $500 plus?

xpndbl3 Jan 24, 2007 10:21 PM

depends on book rate in florida. Around here it's $90-120+ an hour....so just pulling the cover and taking a look is expensive. Setup booktime for a 10 bolt is around 5 hours depending on whether they use all-data, chiltons, etc for their labor rates. So that should clue you in on how quickly 10 bolt prices jump and there's no guarantee that it won't pop back up again. I went through 5 ten bolts running in the low 12s on sticky tires in my camaro with a 305 on spray.

launch it at the rev limiter .. thats the best way to fix stock rears .. put it out of its misery . Broke 2 so far ..1 in my 355 s10 , it got a 8.8 out of a explorer...1 in my 00 t/a , it got a 9''

Easily, if the gear needs to be replaced (most likely solution). If you can find a private mechanic, the charges will be significantly less. That is what I do for jobs I can't handle.
It's a "pay me now, pay me later" scenario (as to when you decide to move to the 12 bolt vs. patching the 10 bolt). I chose to pay later, but that's just me.
