Reasonably, how much power can I put to the wheels without worrying unnecessarily about the rear breaking?
Car is an A4(which usually means the rear sees less stress on launches), and I plan on either running street tires or Nitto DRs. 2.73 gears.
I know that some people lose their rear on STOCK applications, but for every one of them, there's one who's running 10s on it. I'm just trying to gauge an average, rather than the extreme cases.
And do TA covers really help any, or are they just wasted money?

For you, I wouldn't worry about anything. There are a bunch of 10 second A4's on this site running the stock rear, with MUCH steeper gears at that. Your 2:73 gears are a lot thicker and much harder to break. If you plan on staying with them, I do not forsee you ever breaking that rear end while racing....

It's pretty much luck of the draw from what I've seen. I've seen some 10 bolts break on street tires and some love et drags. You just never know. A4's usually have the better luck

You probably won't break any gears with the A4. I would be worrying about the axles in the 10 bolt.
I broke an axle twice with my bolt on 99 WS6,ST4000, 4.10 combo, both times launching on a TNT 100 shot. Maybe it had something to do with the converter flashing to 4800 and having both front tires about a foot and a half in the air Weight of the car plays a big role in driveline failure as well, the lighter the car, the less load on that wimpy 10 bolt.
