Pretty soon I'll be trying my first gear swap, but it will be on a spare rear end and I have a friend that is an experienced installer that I can call in if needed. After reading everything I can find, stickies included and talking to experience installers, I don't understand why so many people are scared of the job.

you need a press and ****, I recommend a shop man, you can't beat it...then you have to set lash...and you DO NOT want to get that wrong, or it'll whine like a lil baby.

The few things that might prevent you from doing it are
1. Bearings. At the least, you will need to press off the pinion bearing to get at the shims.
2. You either need to be able to get some mustard on the pinion nut or have an impact handy.
Everything else can be done...it's just time consuming. You will get very angry at points. It's up to you to know if you can handle taking your time and not settling for mediocre.
