Noise from rear: WoWoWoW what is it?
I've got a stock rear end. Nothing's been done to it except I've changed the oil and additive about every 20 to 30 thousand miles. I've got 72,000 miles.
It makes a lot of noise. Different noises at different times. But the most prevalent one is when coasting in neutral slowing down and coming to a stop. A WoWoWoW sound that decreases in speed and pitch as I slow down.
What is it? Does something need to be replaced? I know virtually nothing about it.
Thanks

It's a bit of a shot in the dark but if the noise goes away on load and comes back on coast, and is more of a moan than a whine, then it might be bad bearings. But this type of bearing noise would also be obvious at higher speeds, any time off throttle.
Another noise that can be described as WoWoWo is also feathered tires. Load/unload would have no impact on this but it can be a awful noise most obvious when coming to a stop on smooth pavement.
Our cars tend to feather front tires even when in spec for alignment.
If it's bearing noise an experienced tech/mechanic will be able to tell.

So I should take it to a mechanic and have him check the bearings?
I've noticed that if i wiggle the rear wheel with a good bit of oomph, while the car is just sitting on the ground, I hear a knocking

I'm petty sure what your hearing is in your tires and not your rearend, but you still need to know for sure. Take it to a trusted mechanic, so you will know for sure what's going on.

Get it checked by a rear end specialty shop, they usually diagnose for 0 dollars. The outer axel bearings can trash the axels in no time as the axels are only hardened to partial thickness. Once it goes thru that the whole axel is shot. Get it checked out ASAP to save big bucks in teh long run.

Man I was actually going to start a new thread about this then I . Im having the same issues. It almost sounds like when you start your dishwasher and it is making that whhhooooossssshhhhhh whhhhooooosssshhhhh noise, that what my rear is doing, if im doing maybe 40 in 4th gear or even 5th it is pretty loud, constant, but if I engage the clutch, its not as loud, and if I make a turn it goes away but comes back. I have comitted the ultimate sin, the rearend fluids have never been changed, although it only has about 45k on the clock and never sees rain and isnt driven from mid oct to may every year Its not too bad. So what do you guys think, is it a bearing then??? I was arguing with my fiance in the car last night and wastnt paying attention and let the clutch out too quick downshifting into 1st gear and about 20 to 25 cause I was frustrated, and locked the rear up and it made that hard chatter, hope I didnt hurt the car. What do you all think. Oldeskool did you come up with anything, same boat as you maybe.

My vote is bearings with the mileage...maybe tires.......Go feel the tread on the tires...if they feel "choppy" and rough then its the tires...change them and consider new shocks....worn out shock will cause your tires to cup....
I have 66K on my 02 TA and my bearings are noisy.....Straight Line Performance will be getting business soon

same thing on mine.. except mine had 2 teeth broke off. mine whined for a while too. small vibration at speeds above 45 mph. had it checked out and noone could see the pinion teeth were apparently cracked. oh well, gives me a reason for 4.10's now..

i havent noticed any noise from the rear end when driving at all but I just got new TT2's and nitto tires on all 4 corners. I have them all installed and they are not rubbing anywhere. when the car is sitting on all 4 tires and i wiggle the rear tire in and out with some force there is a slight knocking noise i hear. it happens when i wiggle either rear tire, but the fronts do not at all. it almost sounds like the wheel isnt pulling up tight but i do have everything tourqued down properly. could it possibly be just the panhard bar making the noise when i wiggle the rear tires back and forth or is it another issue???? the car only has 40k miles on it and its a 2001

I replaced all the bearings and the carrier in my 10 bolt and it still made noise. I blew out the 2nd torsen carrier within another 10k. I'm pretty certain it was because the used torsen I bought was worn out like the one I just blew up. My 9" is silent compaired to that time bomb I used to have.
