Default 82-92----92-02

ok i havnet went to the junkyard and looked yet but im wondering the difference between the 82-92 f bodys and the 92-02 f body rear ends, my question is can i use a 82-92 rear in a 97 formula reason is the a4 formula has a 2:73 rear ratio, and i know some older f bodys came 3:73 from the factory if it wont fit im just going get a 3:42 rear from a 92-02 car but id rather get a 3:73 out back

The rear from the 3rd gens is NOT as wide and weaker. I would advise against it. Though the 3.73's were not all that common on the 3rd gens, it would be a tough find.

Yeah, the G-body's are the one's that would come with 3.73's alot. Esp Monte Carlo's. All Grand Nationals and T-types had 8.5" rears with 3.42's and are really strong.

Weaker ??

Neither one of them shows any kind of strength advantages over another. Well... except if you actually consider an increase in axle spline count (noting that they are the same diameter) an increase in strength.

Default 3 gens

ok if its not as wide thats cool, just swap it for a 4th gen 3.42 which should be a big improvement over a 2.73 and alot of the 3rd gedn 4 cylinder manual cars came 3.73/3.42 1982-1985 even some of the v-8s came 3.73 standard

And why not just change the ring and pinion in what you have again ?
