Help! Can't decide on gear?

I have an auto with a 4.10 in it. I just broke a tooth off the gear and now i'm not shure about putting a 4.10 back in or trying a 3.73. I race at a 1/8 mile track most of the time but when I go to the 1/4 I cann't make it without going into overdrive (that is when I am spraying it). Do you think I'll lose some performance in the 1/8 with a 3.73 or not? Thanks for the help.

There's not a lot of performance difference between 3.73 gear and 4.10s if you have a good converter. The 3.73s will be a little stronger though.

For 1/8th mile racing, I've always gotten best ET and mph with 3.23 gears. You can ususally finish on top of 2nd gear vs. the bottom of 3rd with 3.73 gears (unless you're spraying a big shot).

If you have a good converter, 3.73s will be as fast as 4.10s.

Thanks, I'm spraying a 150 shot and have a sy3500 converter.

Re: Help! Can't decide on gear?

A 3.73 over a 3.23 made my 2002SS go .2 quicker in the 1/8th due to a quicker 60 foot. I never even considered the 4.11's because with an A4 this is too much gear for a daily driven car on the highway in my opinion (it would be OK for the 6 speed boys though).

BTW, the 3rd to overdrive clutches in an A4 are BY FAR the weakest in the tranny, I would avoid spraying through them AT ALL COSTS. What will start happening is the car will start to have trouble shifting from 3rd to overdrive and you will evetually lose the gear.

3.73s unless you want to optimize for the 1/8 mile.
