4.56's??? I'm used to having A4 cars with 3.73 gears.....So turning 2500 runnin 70 is normal to me. I've got an 02 Ws6 M6 now, and I'm wondering is the 4.56 gear set ALOT weaker than the 4.10 for the 10 bolt? This car will have street tires on it 99% of the time.....I just want a car thats really fun to drive. Who's tried em with a stock sized tire on the street? Fun or not? |
you will need a magnifying glass, in order to see the teeth.. :burn: |
IMO i wouldnt go over 4.10s... u hear enouigh stories about 10 bolts a 4.10s soo why go to a 4.56... yer asking for problems... or drop a new rear that can handle it.... |

I would say that you dont really need that much gear. Hell with street tires my car already gets sideways(stock 3.42's) whenever I punch it, much less with 4.56's. I would venture to say itll probably even slow you down on the street, as you'll just be doing burnouts. With street tires that is |
Just got my 9" in from EPP. 4.56, alum. center section, bmr, trac pac. I'll let you know how 4.56 feels. I had 4.10 for about 2 yrs. then it broke so i said why not, do something different. I'm gonna try and find an old 9" center and run 6.30 HAHAHA. |

i went to 456 in my stock 10bolt when i put 18" rims out back, the gears held up but the auburn & then zexal didnt!!!!!!!!!! 456 are a ball in a m6!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but i had 513 in my auto with a 5000 stahl & brake, that was fun tooooooo! |

4.56 Gears fOLKS, The gear teeth are not smaller on a steeper gear ratio. There are actual less of them. The pinion heat has to be made smaller because there are less gear teeth to make the ratio work. 9 on the pinion instead of the normal 10-11 12 etc. The 4.56 4.88 all will hold up just as well as the 3 series gears IF installed correctly. The 4.56 in the ford 9" and 12 bolts are exactly the same way smaller pinion HEAD not gear teeth. Trust me if you do not have them set up correct you will destroy them. If set up correct they will take as much if not more than any street ratio 3 series gear. Remember too they are not designed for driving across country so you must deside what your purpose is for the car. SHort freeway jaunt will be fine 1/2 hour etc. Use good fluid if your doing alot of freeway driving, because less teeth per ring and pinion means a build up of more heat per tooth . Less heat sink then a ring and pinion with more teeth and metal. Ok? Hope this helps break the myth. Jim J D Race.com |
Thanks for clearing that up monzaz......Yes NHRAMAN, I do know what a ring and pinion looks like. I also know that like monzaz said, the PINION just gets smaller in diameter and has less teeth on it the higher you go (numerically) in gears. Unless you've drove on a set AND BROKE THEM, you're not contributing to the thread. Keep the posts coming guys! Thanks alot for the input! |
Any more opinions on 4.56's on the street with a stock size tire? |
4.56's the pinion is the size of an egg. You are asking for trouble, however in a stock 10bolt the zexel diff unit is generally what breaks, not the gears. So you might be fine. |
You will get ok fuel milage on the highway with a 4.56. Remember M6 means .5 double overdrive. If you plan on driving 80 you loose fuel milage either way. I can get ~30 for driving at about 55 or I can get ~23 driving 80 |
I say do it, as far as the high way goes it's like the guy above me said, you lose a bunch of gas milage at 80mph no matter what gear you have, because you get out of the part-throttle fuel map at that speed anyway. Just go a little slower....monanz had a point too, the highway might make a little heat, use some good fluid and maybe install a temp gauge in the rear end like this http://www.xse.com/leres/ss/gaugepod.html and you can monitor it....I say go for it, as a matter of fact I was about to go 4.10, but I'm on a 3.73 wouldn't hurt to look into this i guess |
I would never go higher than 4.10s. EVER. |
