Who here has changed out their tranny gears for more agressive ratios?
So here is my thinking. I'd like to have the best of both worlds.
I have 3.73's in the rear of the car. I'm on the verge of ordering 4.30's, but I don't want to lose my top end pull above 120mph, and I don't want to lose gas mileage.
I was thinking about changing out my tranny gear ratios to give me the best of both worlds.
Get like 3.08 1st gear, and make gears 1-5 pretty steep and close together....fifth gear say .9 or so, so that my car will haul at the track, pull massive top end for highway racing, and still get the best gas mileage in 6th gear, which I'd keep as is.
Thoughts?
I can rev the car to 7000rpms, and I'd like to have a 4th gear tranny ratio to let me cross the traps around 6500rpms or so @ 119-120mph.

Expensive to mess with tranny ratios. You won't recover the cost in gas mileage.
Throw some 4.10s in. Highway revs on an M6 are still decent (no sympathy from us A4 guys <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> ) and it works pretty well at the track if you keep the tire size close to stock. With 7000 rpm you can go to about 130 mph on the street in 4th gear.
