Default Clunking sound from rear over bumps...

So I've noticed this clunking sound or thud when I go over potholes and bumps which sounds like it is coming from the right rear tire area. I've checked the tire jack and it seems to be in there fine and the LCA bolts all seem tight too. I have LCA and panhard goodies, but the rest is stock. Could it be that my side panel/GFX is bumping against the side of the car or something? Wheelhop? Anyone else have this sort of problem?

ttt for ya...

I'm having the exact same problem, so I'm curious as to what people come up with. I started to notice it more after my spring change. I got back under the car, and all suspension points are tight, and the springs are both seated properly. The bumpstop is shortened, so I thought maybe bottoming the shock? Kind of a longshot, but I don't know what else it could be. The dealer couldn't find anything. Mine seems to be isolated to the right side as well.

When you guys say the bolts for the LCA's, etc. are "tight", are you checking with a torque wrench or just by feel?

You've got to make sure they are torqued to spec or they will "clunk" going over bumps. Long story short, I went through this with my past car ('99 T/A) where I used a box end wrench and ratchet until I thought my veins were going to pop out from my head and still had clunking until I used my torque wrench to tighten them (it's something like 74 lb ft). Just can't get the leverage needed with a short wrench and guessing.

Worth a try.

make sure you have those rubber insolator cups on those springs. There was a TSB out something similiar to this back in 96. Cars were coming from the factory without the insolator cups on the springs and they were making metal to metal contact (clunking noise) on hilly bumps and pot holes.

Same problem here.

Its such a mystery, after checking everything in that area inside and out I am still stumped.

check your spring pads also sway bar end links and if yall aahave after market exhaust check clearance between pipes and body especially where it curves over the rear end. also consider the condition of your torque arm bushings.

Also if U have stock LCA's U might want to check condition of rubber bushings if they are wiped they will make that clunking sound !

You know, I had this same problem some time ago. Clunking over bumps (typically uneven bumps where your don't hit them with both rear tires). Sounded like it was coming from the pass side.

I went so far as to take out the spare/jack and every interior panel/rug from the hatch. Still had the noise, so I knew it was under the car. Tightened and retightened everything. Checked heatshields, exhaust, etc. Checked the hatch itself, put weatherstripping under it to make sure it wasn't bouncing around.

Turns out it was the ebrake cable. It passes through these loops on either side of the rear diff. It must've been banging on the loop of metal that holds it in place. I tie wrapped it to the loop with about 50 tie wraps (on both side) and I've never heard the noise again (since last spring or so).

It's crazy how loud the sound was for such a small cable. I guess the hatch area amplifies sound or something.

I thought it was really strange at the time too. It would happen some of the time, then all the time, and then be gone for a few months. The cable must've been moving around slowly, sometimes moving far enough away it couldn't hit anything.

Check it out. You'll know what I mean when you look under the car. 2 loops of thick metal 'wire', one on each side, on either side of the diff, with a rubber wrapped cable going through the loops.

Dope

I'm having the same problem!!! Can't figure it out and I'll try to tie wrap the emergency brakes cable too see if that works...if not then I'll try to retorque everything as mentioned above.....it only happens while cruising slow and even on not so bumpy roads or streets....its like a clunking noise that indeed does sound like the e-cable hitting against something....but I only tried putting two tie wraps on that cable but maybe I'll add alot more.......if it don't work....I'll go from there....
