Default Steel driveshaft on a 98 Formula M6???

I was under the impression that all 98 to 02 LS1 Fbodies had an aluminum driveshaft. Mine has a steel driveshaft instead. were there certain models that came with the steel or was mine installed afterward. It's a 98 Formula M6. The car was built decently when I bought it so I'm wondering if a previous owner swapped it for the steel thinking it'd be stronger.

Thanks for any info.

cars with 2.73 rearends from the factory got steel Driveshafts and actually the steel DS is stronger than the aluminum one anyhow. stock aluminum ones have this bad habit of tearing in half.

Here is a link I had saved.. there are quite a few stock aluminum ones that have broken in much he same way.

6 speeds came with a 3.42 gear, so it should have been aluminum, following your logic.

I dunno. I had a 01 Z28 M6 that also came with a steel driveshaft, so it makes me think there wasn't always a rhyme and reason for what cars they made their way on to!

No. That's why I'm not sure if it was factory or if it was installed afterward.

From what I rem. from my Trans Am Days... you had to have the 1LE package. I think WS6 adn SS's came with that stock... Def a good upgrade to make if you dont already have one .
