Default What causes carrier bearing failure?

I called the dealership this morning... they said the noise in my rear is the carrier bearings. The car only has 18,000 miles on it and this is the third rear. First was a broken ring gear and the past two times has been carrier bearings... what causes them to fail?

Launching on slicks, big rev dumps, low 60' times, improper setup, but usually hardcore abuse.

Well I guess my car would definately fall into the catagory of "hardcore abuse" I guess it is time to do the dreaded and costly rear end upgrade

Or get warranty work done on it.

Good luck on the warranty bit. When my 3:23 started whining, they told me it's because I switched to 18' wheels. Of course not to mention I told them they were nuts as the total tire diameter was only .3 inches larger.
In any case I thought it was time to change ratio so I did it.

Took it to my dealer, they installed new carrier bearings, pinion bearing, and seals under warranty. Didn't say a word about the mods. Btw this is the third time I've took the car in to have the rear repaired. Some dealers don't mind doing warranty work I guess!

I wonder if a bent axle housing would cause the problem?

Gomer, if you spun a carrier bearing you need a new housing, not just new bearings. See, when you spin the carrier bearing the bearing actually hones the carrier bearing housing out of round. Thus the space the carrier bearing resides in is now not perfectly round, more of an oval shape. This makes you even more susceptible to spinning carrier bearings b/c once the carrier bearing gets lodged in the oval shape you'll just spin it again. I'll bet ya' it spins another carrier bearing.

They should replace it with a new housing or re-machine the spun carrier bearing housing.

Each time they have replaced the bearings they tell me that the bearings are "pitted" and "worn" in such a manner that it causes them to get progressively louder. So my failures have all been premature bearing wear to the point that it makes my rear end howl terribly at any speed above 30mph. The first time my rear failed is when I broke the ring gear and they replaced the entire housing. Every time that they have fixed the carrier bearings, they just put new bearings and races in.

Well, you're gonna continue to destroy bearings until they fix the housing where the carrier bearings reside or just replace the housing. That's the only real fix for it. They're just wasting your time by re-installing new carrier bearings.
