just got a rear end from the junk yard how do i tell what gears are in them? where is the stamping?

Most that I have seen are on the end of the pinion shaft. Just divide the big number into the little. If it doesn't have the #'s stamped on the end then just count teeth on the ring and pinion gears and divide. Ex. 39/9= 4.33

Spin the axles and count how many times the yoke spins with one turn of the axle. If it goes around 3.4 times, it's a 3.42, 3 and 3/4 turns - 3.73, etc... Unless you have the cover off, then just do the division like was said above.

Take the cover off and on the side of the ring gear it is stamped. it will say somthing like 57:10 then you devide the 57 by 10 and thatis = 5.7 or 5:70 ect...
