Shoulda been a Chevelle??
#21
A Chevelle was considered a family car, hence the front bench seat, and camaro a muscle car. I think GM realized after remaking the GTO that it was a bad idea to bring back a big *** old school car and make it a **** ton smaller to compensate for today's gas prices. I doubt theyll ever bring the Chevelle back.
Actually the Chevelle in SS form is a Muscle car in the truest terms
(mid size sedan with a large engine) and the Camaro is a Pony car.
I think the Camaro had more PR value than the Chevelle would have in todays market, and I'm a Chevelle guy so you have no idea how much that hurts. The G8 restyled would make a great Chevelle or an Impala SS but sadly the Czars in charge of Government Motors would never let that happen for it is not politically correct. Que the peloisimoblies.

Launching!
I tend to think that a big reason for the Camaro/challenger coming back was to get into the marking that the mustang had. That and the Camaro had a naming rights issue.

Wow, that second concept pic (not the actual car ) looks awesome! I'd like to see something like the '55 chevy come back. Give us a Belair, and a 150. Belair for those that want a top of the line luxury car with all the heated cup holders and such, and then give us a 150 without a back seat, roll up windows, no a/c, 6 speed tranny, but a good LS platform and a light stripper body. No options means it be cheap!

I would love that second concept car pic on the G8 platform. that would be sweet. But i think the camaro was the right car to bring back first. If they did make a chevelle it would make sense to me to have an upgraded engine for the SS over the camaros 6.2L LS3. If they could bump displacement on a SS to like 400ci and have 2 or 3 V8 options like they do with the trucks.
start with the 300hp V6 from the current camaro
Maybe a 5.3 "small block" V8 for the people who want performance but not alot.
the 6.2 for the speed freak/ family man on a budget
a 400ci (whatever that would be in liters) for the people who just want badass performance
would be like the old days when you actually got engine choice instead of V8 or slow like now.
I know the chances of this happening are like 0.0000001% but it would be cool!!!

Well if there is a new Chevelle, it won't be a rebadged G8. Read the link I posted above.......they've completely nixed all plans to carry the G8 over to any of GM's other brandings. The car is pretty much finished as far as the North American market is concerned.....all because of poor sales. Guess we can thank all the "4-wheeled appliance" driving car buyers in this country for that.
I for one see the problem with them. My last family car was a 96 impalass, which I still have. It was replaced, I could have gotten a g8, but that would have been the same as the impala. Instead I spent 1/2 as much and bought a gmc savanha 1500 van. 5.3, 4l60e, 3.73's, tow package, two tvs, seats 7 easy, Oh and its awd........and the back seat makes into a bed, and it holds more stuff. I cant count how many times I ve had it full of people. The funny part, is it gets the same mileage as teh impala....about 15 in town, and 18 on the road.
To bad the 2010 camaro is 2/3rds as heavy as my full size conversion van....at 3200 lbs it would have been a killer. A 4000.....its a van that wont haul anything, and costs twice as much.

I just dont see the Camaro sales holding up 3 years down the line. Its just not that practical of a car. And these days GM needs to sell practical stuff to a wide crowd. The Camaro has a pretty small band of people who want (or think they need) that car. A G8 like car is more fitting to that idea I think.

I personally hope they dont bring the Chevelle back at all. Let it live on as the ultimate bowtie muscle car from muscles golden age, don't bring it back and screw it up!
Besides Ive always thought of the camaro as a pony car more than a muscle car. Chevelle, GTO, Charger those are real muscle cars!

Anyhow, I think if anything a car like the G8 should be re-skinned and made a chevelle, maybe offer a two door version. That car was on par with BMW from everything I have seen of it, even style wise it wasn't far off *shrug*. as for bringing back the camaro or chevelle.. sibling rivalry is ok with me

I like the camaro the way it is, but now they just need to make the G8 an impala, and even more so they need to make the solstice into a buick GN. That would make buick actually worth looking at and bring it back into the racing scene. The turbo version could even be the GNX, how badass would that be? They could restyle it to look kindof like the old 80s blacked out GNXs.

chevelle
I thing they should bring back the chevelle looking close to the 1970-72 chevelles based on the Camaro platform, and should be the new F-body since the transam is history and gone!!!
