Shoulda been a Chevelle??
Hey, I know everyone on here is an Fbody guy, but I was thinking the other day, would it have made more sense (bigger picture wise) for GM to have brought back the Chevelle instead of the Camaro?? The Chevelle could be offered in a 2 door, a 4 door, a convertible, it has a huge fan base as well. Just a thought, what do you guys think?? Try to be open minded.

nah, the camaro played bigger impact in the history of GM. Everyone loved camaro's and they lasted a long time. I think when they stopped producing them, it made a lot of people upset. So they brought them back.
I think bringing it back was a good idea, and they look damn sexy!

A Chevelle was considered a family car, hence the front bench seat, and camaro a muscle car. I think GM realized after remaking the GTO that it was a bad idea to bring back a big *** old school car and make it a **** ton smaller to compensate for today's gas prices. I doubt theyll ever bring the Chevelle back.

The Chevelle also had buckets.
Also, I agree with the G8 idea posted above about rebranding it to save it.
The Chevelle was intended to have a broader following in that it came with bench or buckets, 2 or 4 doors, rag tops, a usuable trunk, etc. In these tough times for GM, I was just wondering if it might have been smarter to try to recreate that similar idea.
Again, Im trying to think bigger picture in what might be more viable for GM.

Well, I was thinking rebadging the G8 as the next Impala was the best way to go. But now that you mention it, bringing it over to Chevy as the Chevelle could make quite a splash.......not to mention go a little ways towards erasing the heresies that GM befell upon the Malibu and Impala nameplates during the past 10 years. BUT........that's ONLY if they really nail the styling. Too many lazy, uninspired ppl working in the design centers?........just forget it and make it an Impala.
I was gonna pontentially be in the market for a good sporty 4 door in the next 2 years....and the G8 was at the top of the list. I definitely couldn't turn down that car.......properly restyled.......as a new Chevelle. How awesome would that be?.......an LS3 powered next gen Chevelle SS?
As far as your poll......yea, I agree with the rest. The Camaro was the car GM needed to bring back. The Chevelle name just wasn't gonna be a headline maker like the Camaro has been. But as I said, that doesn't mean it couldn't be a good money maker for GM as the reincarnation of its outgoing Pontiac 4 door. CAN'T be any worse than a 4 cyl powered FWD Malibu.
EDIT: Well.....so much for THAT idea:

well seeing how the chevelle aws based off the malibu, turning the malibu into a RWD 2 door muscular sport coupe would be along the way to go for that idea.
the following and recognizability of the camaro was definately the righter car to bring back

Hey maybe Chevelle will take over on this platform after 3 years and they will redesign Camaro to an all new sleeker-lighter version retro-2nd gen.

I hope they do rename the G8. Don't really care what as long as it stays in production one way or another. Either that or sell Holden over here kinda like they did Saab. Chevelle would be a good name for it IMO. Drove a G8 once just a GT, but damn I loved that car.

id love to see a new chevelle, if done absolutely right. the G8 NEEDS to be carried over, but not as the chevelle. it would have to come back as a completely new body for me, not ANOTHER rebadge.
but if were talking "bring 'em back," how about bringing back the Buick GN, since Buick is sticking around? IMO, PERFECT time for GM to get the turbo 6 worked back into the line up somewhere, as turbo smaller displacement cars seem to be looming as the new age performance. it wuold be tracing right back to its roots, but with a new body obviously, but same power setup & it would spice buick up a little bit. i would think itd be a smash hit, but then again, i thought the GTO would be too. why cant enthusiats rule the maket?!

Well if there is a new Chevelle, it won't be a rebadged G8. Read the link I posted above.......they've completely nixed all plans to carry the G8 over to any of GM's other brandings. The car is pretty much finished as far as the North American market is concerned.....all because of poor sales. Guess we can thank all the "4-wheeled appliance" driving car buyers in this country for that.
