The other V6....
GM claimed that they were going to offer two sixes, one with great fuel economy, one with better power. We can pretty much assume that the 3.6HV will go into the "better powered" category, but what about the other?
I was thinking it could be:
A)The LP1 2.8L (210hp, 193lb/ft)based off the High-Feature architecture. If GM used this, it would be more expensive than a pushrod six, but the sharing of parts between this and the 3.6L would partially justify it, not to mention the 2.8L is significantly more refined than a pushrod. The power would have to be bumped up or the car would have to be sold for much less than the 3.6L(not likely due to it's expensive nature...)-not a likely option
B) The High-Feature 3.2L(227hp 219lb/ft) from the Holden cars... also expensive.
C) The LZ8 3900 pushrod V6(233hp, 240lb/ft) would be my pick for the Camaro. It is cheap to build, powerful enough to beat the base Mustang 4.0L, has the nice Variable Cam Timing, and(most importantly) it can shut down half of its cylinders and run on 3 under low loads, aka idle and highway cruising. This engine nets the full-size impala ~30mpg, so a Camaro with an extra gear and less weight should theoretically be able to get low 30's, which is four-cylinder-type economy with V6 power.
Alternate choices....
1) the Ecotec Turbo(240hp) would be interesting, although unlikely. I must say, however, that the transmission already exists, and costs would again be reduced via economies of scale, due to the Kappa cars and small cars (Cobalt/HHR) using the engine. Decent fuel economy, but I couldn't see it getting better than the LZ8....
2) The Vortec LLR 3700 I-5(242hp, 242lb/ft) would be a wild card choice by GM. The trannies and everything are already veterans, and therefore, proven. Although the fuel economy isn't stellar in the trucks, I believe it could be tuned at the factory and improved significantly....
Little insight from a quarterly GM meeting - I work for Chevrolet by the way.
It was the only one available that would be good for impressive fuel economy and decent power, but I thought I'd through the question out there for debate anyway, as other folk HAVE disagreed with my selection in the past...
the GM 3.6L LLT? It's a DOHC 60 degree V6, Direct Injection, Variable Valve Timing, 11.3:1 compression, runs on regular unleaded.
304 hp @ 6400, 273 lb-ft @ 5200, fuel shutoff @ 7000
Forged crank, forged pm rods, 6 bolt mains
Currently used in the Cadillac CTS and STS. Was used in the Hummer Hx concept (which was a badass little truck that I would buy in a heartbeat...so GM will never make it).
should be exciting either way though
